HDC Problem

Hey guys first of all im new,I have just bought a 5 door 1998 1.8 freelander it has the uprated headgasket and as far as i can tell runs sweet.I however have a slight problem with the HDC,It comes up on the dash as it should in ignition mode and goes off but when i put it into HDC it doesnt come up on the dash that it is engaged,I have checked the wires on the gearstick and all seem to be fine any ideas cheers adam

I had the same on mine. In my case it was the switch itself that was at fault so I took it out, sprayed vast quantities of electrical contact cleaner into it whilst operating the switch and then let it dry out. Worked fine after that.

I got the same problem. Im kinda thinking it might have something to do with the brakes. My front brakes squeel a bit sometimes and the rear is sticking a bit so im wondering if its got anything to do with that. My front pads could be low causing the ABS not to function in HDC Mode. I had a toyota supra once. The front brake pads were low and this caused the cruise control not to work. Worked fine after i changed the pads. I dont ever use my HDC switch so it cant be worn out or broken. How easy are they to get out and check?

I will give that contact cleaner a shot dont understand why its not working as the brakes traction control etc all work fine,Not that i might ever use it but its handy if it works cheers adam

Short out the switch and see if that brings on the light.

... and remember it only operates in 1st and reverse gears

There's no sensor to measure pad thickness so it can't be that.

Just because you never use the HDC switch doesn't mean that it can't be broken; if anything it increases the chances of the contacts having a layer of oxidisation. I checked the wiring and that was intact so I removed the switch and shorted the wires which made the light come on so the fault had to be in the switch, since I had a can of contact cleaner I thought I'd give it a go rather than buy a new switch.
