HD Steering rods necessary?

Hi Guys,

as above, are they necessary?

My disco has 2 inch lift and 33" tyres. It has had the steering rods replaced recently and a terrafirma steering damper fitted, i'm just not sure whether the HD rods are a must.

its an off road toy. I was just advised that they were a must and wasnt too sure myself how weak the stock ones actually or how much tougher the paddocks HD ones are.

Tracking is out by miles so I need to change them now if I'm going to do it i guess.
 
pfffft, wait til you bend your current ones, then you'll know you need HD duty ones... or carry a lump hammer round to straighten em up!

I've done a fair bit with mine off road and I've got a slight... and i mean very slight, bend in mine but its not something that screams out to be done, I'd rather spend the money on other stuff at the moment

I can't see loads of threads saying how weak the stockers are and how necessary it is to upgrade so I doubted that they break easy. I just got the impression from someone I spoke to that they were a must!

On a separate note have you found diff guards necessary?
 
like i say, I've not bothered with HD steering arms as of yet although I can imagine there will be a day when I clout something solid and give gwyn lewis a ring :lol:

and yes to diff guards, one of the first things i did :lol:

I made a point of gettin some decent wrap around jobby's too not just the cheapo's that clamp on the front... just to be safe!
 
My fender was done up purely for off-road when I bought it and one of the steering rods had a bend in it I'm assuming from hitting a rock and so a steering guard had been fitted. The front diff also had a dent in it and a diff guard had been put on.

Long story short if you're going to be using it off road you can either take precautions now to prevent any problems in the future or you can sort them as they happen. Diff guards, HD steering bars and steering guards are pretty cheap to come by really
 
diff guards yes, steering guard yes, HD steering bars Id leave, at least for now.

once they bend, they do tend to bend easier than originally.

all depends on how heavy you get into offroad use.

Absolutely essential - the diff cover is quite soft and easily punctured by a sharp rock or boulder. If you puncture the diff cover you loose your diff oil - how do you get home?

For the price they can be bought (£15 to £20 apiece) there's no question about it.

an alternate is to weld some 20/25mm angle iron to both sides of the arm makes it much stronger and its alot cheaper, iv gone HD mainly because i could but did have angle iron, only down side is IF you bend it its hell of alot harder to pull back, but nothing a good winch woulndt sort (1-anchor your car, 2-winch round arm 3-anchor other car 4-pull like buggerybut not too much lol)
