I have removed all of the studs connecting the 2.25 Diesel engine and gearbox. However, I cannot seem to be able to get them to split with the engine still mounted on the chassis. Should the engine come away easier if I lift it a little using the crane?

I have double checked that all the studs are actually undone, as I know that it's easy to miss one or two.

Thanks for any info.

bell housing on deries box is a very good fit onto flywheel housing ,plenty of penertrating fluid and the use of some large levers will help ,use of clutch pedal can help if slave is still connected

It's a good idea to lift the engine and box from the rear and place a thin plank of wood under the crossmember to support the rear of the engine and give the gearbox something to slide backwards on. A few scuffs on the mating surfaces won't make a lot of difference, it's not exactly an oil tight seal - just dress any high spots off with a fine file. The last time I had a stuck gearbox it was 'cos the release bearing had mated itself to the clutch and I ended up using a very slender socket set threaded through the inspection hole to undo the clutch plate bolts. I do hope you don't have this nightmare scenario.....

I managed to do this in the end. To start with, I lifted everything off as one piece.

After that, it took a few taps on the mounts (in the direction away from the engine) with the hide face of a copper/hide mallet. There was quite a bit of oil in the bellhousing, but it worked in my favour as that meant that the two hadn't corroded together.

In the end it actually came apart very easily, there was no need for levers or anything like that.

Well done chap.

Mine was together quite nicely. I think we lifted the engine an inch or so and applied some downward pressure on the engine/ gearbox joint and the underside opened up nicely. Many ways to skin the cat! :D
