Hi guys,

my disco came with BFG AT 275/65/18 tyres (it has 2" lift). The previous owner also gave me the original wranglers 255/55/18.

My main concern is that by running such huge tyres (32.1") will damage my drive train... Does this proceed?

Also, I'm not sure how the stock size tyres will look with the 2" lift... And if the ride will be less comfy...
What do you guys think?

What damage do you think is happening???

Bigger wheels have more inertia, so can break things off road more easily. But a 32" tyre is standard fitment on many Land Rovers, that use the same driveline components as the Disco.

Do you plan to off road at all?

On road performance will have changed, as taller tyres effectively increase the gearing. So blunt acceleration, but lower cruising rpms.

The only thing I will say is that wide wheels generally have greater off sets, this in turn helps knock out your wheel bearings faster.

As for running 18" rims, sodd that, gives suspension bushes way too hard a life, and with low profile tyres on the ride is very unforgiving, very nice aesthetically but thatz about it.

The ABS and related functions are degraded, the deceleration threshold and breaking distance are increased with aprox the same percentage like the diffrence between standard and bigger tyres dimensions... that's tested by me many ways, IMO if there are no HD parts in the drive train such huge tyres can ''tenderise" that too

I bought this car for daily use and also for the occasional expeditions, so not really off-road, although it's possible to find myself in mud/dirt tracks...

Sorry but I'm not sure I can really agree with any of this. The ABS and HDC will work exactly the same, not matter the tyre size.

Braking distance also won't be affected by anything noticeable. A taller tyre has more leverage, so you'll have to work the brakes harder, but they should have more than enough bite. 35" tyres and yes, you'll notice the braking more so. But 32", I doubt very much.

Remember a Defender runs the same axles, gearbox, transfer box (different ratio) and 32" tyres as standard.

Camel Trophy Discoverys also ran 7.50 x 16 tyres, which are narrow, but about 32" tall too.

I spoke about ABS system involvment not mechanical brakes ;) ... the ABS system's functions will all be altered with the same percentage like the spoeedometer cos it takes the information from the same sensors if you see what i mean, don't confuse brakes with ABS please, and if the defender was fitted with bigger wheels as standard the ABS was calibrated for those standard wheels, i've studied this system hard and i know what i'm talking about believe me
