Has anyone got a Perkins 4.236 engine (NON TURBO) fitted in their Land/Range Rover, if you have could you tell me how it handles and what the good and bad points are.
I've been offered one to get restored and would like views off real people not sales men trying to sell me a perfect reconditioned engine.
I'll be wanting it for my 6x6 project so I don't need zillions of horse power but I do need it to be a good work horse.

I had one in my old S111 88" twas a fine engine, low revving but torquey even at the lowest of revs, easy to maintain and surprisingly good on fuel, if you ever want to go over 50mph again then think about an overdrive or something to lift the ratios a bit but for my old s111 plugger was fantastic, noisy, smelly just like a proper diesel should be :D

Thanks for that Disco, I don't want a motor thats full of electronic crap just a good solid engine, the overdrive will be a must but I'm not to worried I'll get round it somehow.

Hello. We have got the same Perkins engine (on a pallet) and are trying to find out information on the engine, whether it can be fitted into our defender 90 and who can do it for us!?!
So far we have not found anywhere that sells the conversion mountings. Thats if it needs mountings we simply don't know.

If the engine is unsuitable we will be selling it. Its only done 2000 miles and is in good condition.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi gents. I have a Perkins Phaser fitted to my 110 which is a newer version of the 4236 so I guess my experience may help. These engines are heavy and I have Disco rear HD springs + 2" on the front ( need to clear the Salisbury axle). The engine to gearbox ( LT85) conversion ring and backplate are MD engineering items. The engine mounts are 10mm plate and home made. Exhaust is 2.5 to 2 3/4" s/steel straight through to a 110 TD5 rear tail pipe and box. Sump is home made. Power steering (needed) pump is Disco 300 TDI but reverse mounted and all bracketry home made.
The big mod is the gearing. When I bought this engine brand new in 1994 I fitted it to my 127 which had 9.00 x 16 Michelin XLs and a 4 speed LT 95. and the gearing was fine. Now fitted to my 110 it
has a 5 speed LT85 and LT 230 transfer box to which I have fitted Classic Range Rover 3 speed auto high range transfer gears ( 1.003:1). The engine revs to approx 2800rpm allowing a top speed of 95mph ( on 7.50 x 16 Avon Rangemasters ) 25 mpg around town and approx 32 mpg on a run unladen. Hope this helps.
