Hi

Not had Hippo long and the first job was to fit a hands free kit for my mobile. After lots of searching I came across this Pioneer DEH-4500BT, it has a Parrot hands free system built in.
I was concerned about the connectors at the back but went ahead anyway.
The job took about 15 minutes (once I had all the bits), I pulled out the Land Rover CD and just plugged the new radio straight in (no loss of clock/horn), the only problem I had was getting the adapter for the Aeriel - loads on Amazon for about 80p. I ran the microphone behind the fascia and mounted it in front of the steering wheel (see pics).
Now I have hands free and with Bluetooth it plays the music off my phone and also gives satnav directions through the speakers! :)
All for about £80!

Cheers

Good job, thank you for sharing.

What is the red switch on the right of the steering wheel?

No idea!

I think it controls a previous hands free kit because there are mics on both sides but I can't find the wiring.

The car did have a big red button instead of an air vent on the passenger side and this stopped the engine. Previous owner ran a driving school and used the FL for trailer training - FL was in Holland and separate license required for trailers.

:)

thanks for the info, quite interested in this. So what extra bits did you need? And if you have steering wheel controls does it work them?

The only bit i needed was:
Car Aerial Adaptor For Car Radio ISO to DIN

Price:£0.70

In stock.
Dispatched from and sold by Consoletronic Ltd.

I got this off Amazon.

Sorry don't have the controls on my Wheel but the radio does state that it should work.
Fitting was easier than I expected, esp with lots of space behind radio to run mic.

I have the next model up to that one in my disco. Great little radio i use the usb connection with a fob with my mp3s on instead of burning disks. Hands free is great. Mine also has the ability for remote buttons .there is an adapter for about 40 to use the disco dash buttons on the radio. but if you good with a soldering iron you can make one for about a pound to plug in

Like the look of this unit. Ay idea if you can plug an iPhone into the USB with an iPhone t USB wire or would you just be better off using the Bluetooth?

Looks like a decent head unit, I've got a Sony xplod head unit and use blue tooth streaming for music, in car calls and Sat nav.....all from my smart phone. :)

I quite fancy one of those flip out screens for built in sat nav but unless you spend big money then they tend to be those crappy chinese HUs. Don't know whether its worth getting a screen or just a single din HU like the pioneer or sony?

I've had pioneer HUs in the past and sony ones and the pioneers have usually been better quality however, some of the new sony ones look pretty decent.

I used to be an Alpine only guy until i got this Sony. I was impressed with the features it had for what I consider a cheap unit. Then I played it, my god has it got some power rite over the frequency spectrum. Sony claim it's 52 watts per channel. I often take this kind of claim with a pinch of salt until I tested it, i was nicely surprised to see a proper 24 watts rms out of each channel with 100Db separation between them too! Good for a unit I picked up for under £100. It's even got hands free phone kit and Blue tooth audio streaming. Good unit although it's now been discontinued :(

Think Halfords are selling one relativly cheap (maybe the updated version?) I will have to wait until I have it in my hands yet (the car). I feel like a kid at Christmas. To think I didn't wanna get rid of my current car either - I am glad I have got something a little different to the norm!

Keep thinking about amping the lot up and starting a sound system build. Other half will kill me though as I have no money! Well I do but I am being made redundant and not going to stay in the job I am currently doing = big wage cut.
