Hi all, just a quickie...

I have a '97 Disco and have been trying to get the handbrake to work...

If adjustment at the nut and the cable adjuster doesn't make the brake operative does that mean the handbrake is in need of new brake shoes?

I'm confused

Adjust the shoes in the drum until they are on then back it off a couple of notches. Then adjust the cable so that the hand brake is on after 4/5 clicks.

If you can adjust the shoes up, but not the cable then the cable has stretched and needs replacing. IME it is very rare for the shoes to wear out; more often than not they become contaminated with oil because the rear oil seal on the transfer box is leaking.

Take the drum off and clean the whole lot inc shoes with petrol. Let it dry and put it back together then adjust as normal.

Thanks - I guess cleaning is the first port of call.

The Haynes manual is crap for this (Sadly, the Rave CD doesn't work on my new Mac) is there anything complicated about removing the pads and cleaning everything?

You don't need to remove the shoes just the drum nothing complicated.
Undo front prop shaft from drum flange, out with philips screw, slide off drum.
Lots of petrol and a paint brush to get it in everywhere.
When you get the drum off you will see what I mean.
Easy worthwhile job.
