Handbrake on my Disco 1

I have a discovery 1 200tdi on a K plate. today the handbrake has decided to not relise unless you hit it where the pads are with a copper hammer.

I am looking at getting some parts in to fix this and i have some questions:
1) Will mine be vertically mounted or horizontally mounted ?
2) Is it a easy job to fix this?
3) What parts will I need to get

your handbrake has pads on it?
where is your handbrake?
the pads will be mounted in the same orientation as the disk????
unless its a drum, in which case the shoes will be inside the drum.
dead easy - depending on whether its a disk or a drum
havent got a clue, coz i have never seen a disco with pads on a handbrake.

The handbrake works throught the Gearbox/driveshart. It does not go to the wheels.

i dont think so Lerk, but the OP asked about pads - now I mite have got it wrong, but pads are normally associated with disks - now either the OP didnt know what he was talking about - or he has got an X-Eng disk conversion. I dont know what the OP has fitted, so I asked the questions to find out more. Hence the Q about where he thinks the handbrake is, and the possibility that it could be a drum handbrake.

does that make sense?

My my, we are rather anal tonight aren't we!

I made the assumption that he mentioned pads he was after shoes for the standard drum brake as no mention was made to disk brake conversions!

Phil, microcat just shows the two different types as being possibilities!:doh:

Thanks Lerk and ye its standard, And you was right pad/shoes its the drum on the drive shaft.
I was going to use it for off roading but as the most local place for me was woodland 4x4is closed I am just sorting it out to sell it.

When yu have been on here as long as I have, you will realise that making assumptions int very helpful. Sometimes the OP knows more about their car than you do. Sometimes the OP dont know Jack ****. So its best to be sure, before you reply.
That aint anal - thats trying to be helpful. You would look a right prat if yu told him what shoes to use, then discovered he had a disk brake conversion!

You will notice I was not rude - I asked specific Q's to ascertain what the OP knew.

Having read the above,normaly standard h/brake you should get away with strip/clean and adjust, they do get lot of crap in them especialy if wet off roaded

if it's jamming on i'd say its the cable

It is possible that you have a leaky rear Tbox oil seal, which is also an easy fix.

I will be hopefully haveing a look at it in the new year now unless there is anyone in Kent that wants to do it for me ? he he

could also be bad earths shorting through the handbrake cable and causing it to weld the inner cable to the outer cable, possibly, probably

Does anyone know where abouts in Kent that will not cost much to get this fixed?
As I want to sell it once I have done the welding on it.
