I have had my center console apart today to sort out my seized transfer lever.
All was going fine until I tried putting the handbrake cable back into the lever. The button was right in and I can't seem to get the HB lever mechanism right.
Any clues as to what I've done wrong.

I've got it back together now, but the handbrake is not working properly.
I think I will have to look for another HB lever
Not necessarily, they aren't complex. I even shortened one and converted it to "fly off" for a kit car I built. You just need to make sure all the bits are on in the right order, particularly the spring and round the right way, which seems daft but things can go on 180 degs out sometimes. Then lube it so everything works smoothly. For some reason the mechanism reminds me of a retractable biro, at least the top end!!!
I said "the spring" of course I should have said "the springSSS"!
I take it you did readjust it after taking it out to remove the centre console when working on the Hi-lo shifter?

Readjust it?
I removed the clip and pin and the cable end fell out. Then tried the reverse procedure but the bar in the middle of the HB lever was in the way.
I flipped the cam over, but now the button is only just about sticking out the handle

Thinking about it, the handbrake mechanism was never that good, it always took a few attempts to release it.

I haven't worked on my D1s for so long I have forgotten exactly how you adjust the handbrake but I have a feeling there is a nut in the cab and possibly another adjuster on the brake drum. Both need to be right.
But then again something in the mechanism may be worn.
I personally always actuate the button even when putting the handbrake on, so it doesn't go rasping up the notches on the locking mechanism, so it don't wear out!

Same here, never let it click. But not sure if the old dear who owned it before me, did, mind, it's not done 50k yet.
I don't really use the HB, especially when parked on the drive.
I'll have another look tomorrow, it doesn't look warm, it's got to do with that central bar, I think.

I've had another look at the HB and can't figure out what has happened.
I've tried moving the cam part either fully back and forward.
With the cam forward, the button is out, but the rod is in the way of the cable pin.
Cam fully back, button is in. IMG_20220512_155702894.jpg IMG_20220512_153618580.jpg
What am I doing wrong here, any advice greatly appreciated

When I put mine back on a few years ago, the rod was jamming up the handle. I found if you put a thin screwdriver up there and wriggled it about, the rod would straighten and move freely.
