Hi,

The rear brakes on my wife's freelander are binding. You can tell this when you pull away. I have just jacked up the rear of my wife's Freelander, taken the handbrake off, taken it out of gear. The rear brakes are rock solid and I cannot turn them by hand.

The Freelander manual states I should be able to turn them by hand. I just called the garage who recently serviced the brakes and he said 'no you can't turn the wheels as the rear diff won't allow you too'

Now I am confused. The Freelander manual says you can and the garage is saying no.

Anyone know what is the correct answer?

Thanks

If both rear wheels are off the ground I believe you can but not with just one as the garage said hope it's some help

Ok, thanks. What I find is that with both wheels of the ground there is a very small amount of turn. As if the vehicle is in gear. I checked and both the handbrake and the car was out of gear.

I am sure it is the brake as when I pull away I can feel the back end of the vehicle dragging. When reversing I also feel the rear of the vehicle lift slightly as it pulls away.

SO it has to be the brakes.

Really annoyed as the wife just spend £300 as part of the MOT having rear brakes cleaned and adjusted!

Garage then say to me 'bring it back up. Most likely one of the shoes has come off' Very annoying

yes brakes i would think with both wheel off the ground they should spin freely with opposite side turning in opposite direction ,brakes sticking on is a very common freelander problem, cables would want checking as wll as shoes and mecanism parts are quite cheap £15 ish on

You can loosen the rear behind the handbrake also its fairly easy to get to, a while ago mine were binding it was brake dust that had gotten wet after some puddle driving and solidified..
