The handbrake warning light was staying on or flickering so I assumed the switch was broken. Today I removed the centre console because my footwell is still or rather has again become steeped in water. Was going to lift the carpets and sound proofing out to give it a proper dry/ make sure everything is ok under there.

Anyway, had a look at the handbrake and it turns out the switch is fine it was rather that there is a piece of metal that goes across the top of the handbrake lever that stops it from pushed down too far and that is broken, so when you put the handbrake down it goes too far and the switch pops back up again.

Anyway to keep a long story from being any longer I picked up another lever for £12 form a breaker. The garage I use say I'll need a new brake cable as well but I think they're talking balls, are they?

This has less to do with the handbrake than it has to do with just checking they know what they're talking about.

It seems fine, because you don't have to stretch it to attach it at either side. It fits with a sort of eye and pin type arrangement with the lever down. I'm just paranoid about leaving my pride and joy with anyone probably.

I just went and got the salvaged one out of my boot, and I'll give the mechanic the benefit of the doubt and say he just didn't know what he was talking about. All I need to do is take off two clips, one that attaches to the ratchet lever and one to through the base of the lever assembly.

This should be an easy job. I didn't pay so much attention when removing the salvage one because I just wanted it out.

Half an hour to remove, replace, adjust, pull the grip off the old one, put the gaiter on, find the wee clip that I lost down the back of the seats etc etc.

All working as it should. Nice simple cheap repair.
