Hi

My disco. 2 td5 failed MOT for the excessive moment of hand brake. I know this issue is not
complicated but I have not done this. Can anyone tell me how to shorten travel distance of hand brake?

Thanks!
Kai

jack a rear wheel up and using a 17mm socket adjust the bolt in bottom front of back plate till shoes grab then back off till drum spins freely ,then if necessary adjust the cable at lever end, theres 2 flats were it comes through you can adjustwith a spanner or undo the 2 10mm headed bolts holding lever bracket to the tunnel and pull bracket up and adjust from under anti clockwise to remove slack in cable

I have screwed the bolt clockwise until tightened, then screwed anti-clockwise 1.5 turn as D2 manual said, I still feel drum (front plate?) tight. Do I need to release hand brake first?

Okay, I released handbrake to get drum rotated left or right some distance after back off 1.5 turns.
Now I tried to open centre brake console, I have removed the two screws in the box, and got the console loose but it is still hard to access brake cable, I can not find a way to get gear (auto) stick off.

obviously hand brake has to be off to adjust it, you adjust to lock the rum then back off just enough till it turns freely

I opened a gap from brake console, there is bolt not like brake adjuster, but a brake cable cross round black rubber see attached pic

Still struggling to remove the console

youll need to undo hand brake lever bracket so you can pull it up and access the adjuster under it or try and get a spanner on it from underneath

If I can remove auto gear knob, I can get more space to access brake, I have not found info of how to remove it. brake level doesn't block plastic cover. I don't see e clip on the gear stick. See pics

Thanks!, I pulled out the knob straight up, there is no adjuster (bolt) like D1, 2004 D2 may have different design.
once console is out of the way undo the 2 bolts holding lever bracket to tunnel you adjust the cable on under side , the rubber you see poking through the bracket sits over a screwable cap on end of the cable

I double checked it, the black rubber sits on fixed round base, there is no way to screw using a wench, a 13mm bolt may be fixing the bracket. I don't know if it is possible to adjust cable under car or maybe remove more under the console.

some cables can be adjusted from the top, some like yours cant so you have to undo bracket and pull it up
shopping

you can see the black rubber piece that goes through the bracket tube and the silver adjustable collar just under it

Thanks Jamesmartin, I made it. The adjuster is under the bracket. Please see pic. To adjust brake, undo the bracket and loose the cable on the lever to get the console out of
