Half shaft wear

Is it possible to identify the wear on a half shaft by looking at the splines, or so you really need to feel for play when built into the hub /diff?

Images of a google search, top one is a excessive, but the new shaft on the right shows what the splines should look like. The bottom image is a worn shaft, the tops of the teeth are shiny because of wear, sharper, and have a changed profile from relatively square to mostly triangular ..

Here are a few photos of the half shaft I just pulled out last night.

theres the start of wear but not enough to worry about yet
