Grubby Gearbox

I've just started looking at getting the gearbox ready for fitting to the new chassis and to say it needs a good clean is a bit of an understatement! But why is it so badly covered in oil/grease? Anywhere I should be looking to track down the source? It's an LT77.

thats very clean compared to many,some oil will be lost through the gear box top ,oil runs along the top selector shaft into the stick housings,not enough to alter oil level much in the box but leaves stuff damp and dirt collect

A small amount of oil can spread a long way. To add to that you might have had a bit of grease fling out from the UJ's after servicing.

That's helpful, thanks. I think you might be right about the UJs. A lot of it does look like grease rather than oil and it's only on the one side of the box. I'll give it a good wash and see if it returns.

Very little will return until after the UJ's have been greased again. The old grease, that's squeezed out of the joint by the new grease going in, gets flung off. Unless you poke a rag in and round the joint to get it out

Lost upper engine oil will make its way back there be it by wind or running along breather pipes cable's

That is one of the cleanest Land Rover boxes I have ever seen.

Often, you have to use a scraper to find the filler plugs!

As above, that's a remarkably clean LT77. Gunk, a scrubbing brush and steam works very well on gearboxes...

eta: here's my R380 and gear lever housing as a clean reference

That's so clean it almost seems a shame to use it! I'll give mine a good scrub at the very least, but I'm not sure it's going to end up looking like that.

@Resurgam ,there's a great enamel paint to use on engines and gearboxes from POR15. It has 80% pigment, goes on brilliantly, has very high temp profile and looks great.
