Hi all recently done a motorway trip in the 300tdi , in 5th gear coasting all is well , however when i put a tiny ( and i mean tiny ) touch of throttle on a grinding noise appears from what sounds like the gearbox .

When i put more throttle on (still only a touch ) the noise dissappears :confused: and then its fine

Could it be a worn gearbox thats the problem or maybe the front diff ??

The sound is definatly coming from the front , I cant work out though where exactly as when i can hear it im am doing 50 mph :doh:

It does happen in 4th too but that itsnt as noticeable so i assume its all through the gears

Any help would be appreciated guys :)
 
Chock rear wheels securely, jack up front and support on strong axle stands. (not bricks!). Try spinning front wheels, listen for noise from front diff. In neutral spin front wheels and listen for noise from transfer and gearbox out put shafts. While you`re under there try topping up oils in diffs and boh boxes. If any take a lot of fluid you may well have run a bearing/gear-set dry. And check prop shaft too, doesn`t sound as if that`s the problem, but only takes a few seconds while you`re there.
 
First job is to discover where exactly the noise is coming from. All else follows.,, Unless you got a pit it`s time to get dirty.
 
I would suspect wear in the transfer box. My 110 with a high mileage Disco transfer box did this.
The noise was much worse than yours as it was very worn,
Driving normally it was fine but when lifting off to cruise it made a grinding noise like a shaft vibrating in a bearing or bush, this would disappear if I lifted off, it was just on the point of not driving and not cruising or at the point of lifting off at speed then it would disappear.
I think the cause was wear in the transfer box bearings as it only did it after I swapped over to the worn transfer box, everything else was the same.
If the sound comes from the back of the gearbox area then that's probably what it is.
I went all over the country with it like that by the way and it was very bad, so bad it drowned out the radio .:)
 
remove each prop in turn and try vehicle in difflock ,this will eliminate front or back end ,drain a cap full of oil from t/box and g/box check for filings or metal sheen.front diff can sound like its coming from middle very deceptive,when removing props check diff for end float and smooth rotation same with t/box flanges but front will have up down side to side movement because of the way the shaft is supported one thru ball brg the other by the diff gears
 
Thanks a milllion for the replies i will try and use my uncles pit and try to investigate further . Am i right in saying that to check the difff oil levels i need to undo the nut in the difff pan that looks like it takes a 1/2" ratchet head ?

How do i check the transfer box oil level ?

Could the problem be in the front prop with the uj's because i can feel slight vibration on accellerating but that wouldnt make the grinding noise would it ??
 
Worth checking the uj`s to. Mine has just gone boom. Sounded very similar before hand.
An yes the diff plugs are just 1/2 " square drive.

Transfer box level plug is near brake, also 1/2" square. G-box level on side of box,it`s one of those "star" shaped ones (torx?). If any levels are down, drain at least some oil out, into glass or similar container, and inspect for metal filings water etc. If you don`t know when last done think about changing it all sometime soon.
 
Right , a update on the jeep . After driving around trying to listen where this bloody noise is coming from i have found that the clunking / grinding is always there no matter if its in drive or not :mad:

If I am in neutral rolling along the noise is there and if im in drive its less noticable but still there . :confused:

OK OK the landrover 300tdi 1997 :D found out it is the uj's on the front prop just had them greased and thats made the world of difference ... so ... all is better , i think its in need of a good service as i havent done one this year :doh:

how much are new oj's for the front prop ? would BMS stock them ?
 
If they were that bad then the noise will probably return soon. Best to replace `em.
Island4x4 have got `em at £8 0r £14, others around too. Best to get set of bolts & nyloc nuts too. Make sure rear u/js are also greased up. And the slider on the props needs grease too.
