There seems to be quite a lot of speak about this problem, of shaky warm starts..
We've had our 2004 Freelander TD4 now for 5 yrs and so far has been as good as gold, but its started this lumpy start with grey /white smoke when starting from warm.
First thing on a cold morning with the glow plugs it is fine, just a little puff, a hot engine after 10 mins is fine, but this afternoon after 4 hours it took a little starting followed by a huge cloud of grey smoke, but settled down and ran fine. It turned over quickly with the starter motor, firing occasionally, then caught after about 10 secs.
Its been having this smoke issue for a couple of years but never no trouble to start, and was always better during the winter when it used the glow plugs.
From what I can gather this problem is quite well known, but I can't seem to find a cure. So far I've removed the EGR, fitted BMW vortex breather, replaced coolant temp sensor, full service numerous times with all filters, checked glow plugs, injector leak back is / was fine, tried different fuels and Millers eco power plus treatments but to no avail..
Has anyone found a cure for this, are there any problems known of about stretch in the timing chain throwing the valve timing slightly? Or soot and gunge from the EGR around the valves causing poor compression until it all settles down?
Can't seem to find many reports of this engine and problem in the BMW's, it runs fine and during the summer it gave us nearly 43mpg, with the aircon on too!! so there cant be too much seriously wrong..I hope.
Hoping someone can shed some light??
Cheers,
Mark
