Cheers mate I went out in the snow last night and the idler pulley fell off taking the drive belt with it :-( so far I have not survived one challenging task without something breaking...

Just a bad run mate. You'll get the issues ironed out.

Thanks chaps! It does have a hard life though, I bought it in August and so far put 10k miles on it! To list its faults from now they are:

Ringing Bell sound 2-2500rpm very annoying.
3-4 gear selection a bit notchy (think it needs adjusting)
Knocking noise front drivers side when going over bumps.
Knocking noise rear axle, constantly (watts linkage)
Transfer box needs replacing (gears are too tall) but thats not the cars fault.
Steering is extremely vague and loose I think the steering box needs adjusting.
Brakes pull to the right I have new caliper sliders just need to swap them when I change discs/pads.
Various oil leaks.
Hard starting in the morning (fine once its started)

The priority is steering and brakes because its a pig to drive at the moment :) I still love it though!

Looks good mate.

First thing i had planned for mine was all round disc's, pads, calipers, bearings.
Trying to stop a tank with no brakes gets boring very quickly.

Cheers mate, no it had mods when I got it. All I have added is wheels and arches, stuff that broke though so far stands at:- turbo, front axle, front prop, idler pulley, fan belt. :) (edit: 9.1.15) fuel pump, dodgy ckp, oil in injector loom, knackered battery,

Dieseldog, maybe now is your time to shine :) Sorry chaps but I'm going to have to add to the recent chain of non starting td5 threads :-( Last night I drove to my mums house which is about 20 miles away when I set off a couple of hours later I set off home got half a mile down the road and the car cut out and would not restart. First things first the battery seems healthy enough lots of cranking power. I can hear the fuel pump and it sounds smooth with no grinding or gurgling sounds I checked the red plug for oil and yes some was present.

By this point greenflag had turned up after I walked off to get some tea :) We cleaned the plugs for ecu, crank sensor and injection loom with brake cleaner. Still not starting so I get it recovered home and today got a new injection loom, rocker gasket, injector seal kit and fuel non-return valve. I took the rocker cover gasket off cranked it and everything moves as it should even got to see the oil draw up on the top of timing chain which was nice and no sign of fuel contamination or leaking from injectors also oil level was about right too.

Fitted the new wiring loom and still not starting. I got my Solus Pro out to do some diagnostics, lots of error codes so I cleared them all and since trying to restart the car 2 came back apart from the ac clutch error which means nowt I got "55 Temp Gauge" and "96 Road Speed" I'm beginning to think the ecu is toast now I do have a spare one but it needs coding to my car. Would you say this is the way to go or do I shell out for a new fuel pump. I'm not able to check fuel pressure as I do not have the tool and its cheaper to buy a pump than get the kit to test it.

Some help would be much appreciated as friends and family are starting mock me and there is nothing worse than getting all the armchair mechanics telling me I should buy japanese all though they have a point :-(

At this point, if all of the obvious parts have been checked/replaced with no joy, then it might just be the ECU that's knackered. Don't quote me on that though, sierrafery and all the other td5 gurus will be along shortly to offer words of wisdom.
And whatever you do, don't go Japanese.... had a hilux for close to 3 years, and although they never go wrong, they lack the soul of a land rover.
Happy New Year mate.:)

Cheers mate happy new year! I just ordered a new intermotor crank sensor I'm going to fit the non return valve today and look for someone to reprogram this spare ecu. Can anyone advise on why a Bearmach fuel pump is £60 yet a VDO is £200? My local land rover specialist said they dont fit anything apart from vdo/genuine as the cheaper ones are a waste of time. I put a bearmach in my classic rangy and its been fine :-/ My dad used to have a hilux surf it was reliable but too cramped and uncomfortable for my liking.

Got bearmach in mine been fine 2 years.though i did have an issue with sender inacurrate so i swapped with original and all ok.

Where are you located Greg, anyone with nanocom or hawkeye nearby, they might give a better indication of what's up (or not!).

I thought so if it turns out to be fuel pump the bearmach it is. Thanks CambridgeCockney :) Bennehboy I live in Rossendale but I can't move the car. Can I take the ecu out and plug it into another car and run the diagnostics that way?
