Hi all

Just a quickie to introduce myself.

Not so long ago the better half wrote off our second car, a Shogun Pinin. It was a nice little truck, but useless in the wet and unfortunatley Claire forgot to engage the selectable 4WD a month or so ago. No one was hurt, but the car coming the other way was totalled too. :eek:

Anyway, after some crafty negotiation with the insurance company I ended up with 30% more than what I paid for the vehicle - a recommendation for Admiral Insurance here I might add. The mission was to purchase a 'well weighted' truck (we are out in the sticks a little here) with auto 4WD.

A few weeks ago I ended up with a 04 TD4 Freelander SE (oh no not another one!). It's alright actually, I did the usual checks on buying it - 125k miles, one owner from new - FSH no expense spared, VCU seems good (does not heat up) although no paperwork to suggest it has been changed - I managed to shave some pennies from the sale price as it was due a service and MOT.

I am a very amature mechanic, but after buying the Haynes manual set about my way on servicing it and came accross a couple of issues - but I will post a thread on the correct section to look for some insight here. :confused: I have looked to do 'sensible' things - the EGR mod to fit and have already chucked in the BMW crankcase filter too. I have the inlet manifold off at the moment trying to devise a plan of cleaning that - research on here is invaluable.

Over all I am very pleased with the vehcile - it certainly is a lot safer and more stable on the road than the Pinin pile of poo. Interestingly my company car is a Skoda Yeti 140 TDI 4WD - the grip on that is incredible despite my best efforts I cannot get it to slide! :p That's the point I have questions on tyres too, but will continue to research before posting pestering threads.

Yes that would make it a bit hairyer! I am a sensible old fart most of the time to be honest. :p

Just a quick question - I set up a thread on the Freelander part this morning which when submitted advised that it would need to be approved by a moderator. How long does this process usually take?

About as long as it takes for someone to notice :eek:

Just approved it. The software seems to pick on random early posts it suspects as spam for some reason :confused: Doesn't happen often and annoyingly doesn't give any notification that it's hidden a post :mad::rolleyes:

Great intro mate! Welcome, seems like your one of the first who says tyres and search/research in the same post, ull get little abuse here! :) do your search and ull soon find all the info on most things :) especially tyres!!

Cheers. I'll see what happens at MOT time in a couple of weeks... lucky I have a friend in the tyre (and MOT) trade - but the wear on the inside of the OSF looks a bit iffy to me. I suspect Mr MOT tester will reveal something before I have time to investigate...

Shame I'm on 17" rims, although perhaps for the worst looking at the prices. Even the difference between 215/55 and 235/55 17s is pretty considerable, but I guess I'll look into recommendations a little more (and advice from Mr MOT man) before venturing much further. Always best to be prepared I guess - although the other half might have a shock when a big wedge of the holiday fund is spent on new boots! :decision:

Best of luck with the land rovers enemy (Mr MOT man), could I ask what you use the freelander for? :)

Hiya. It's our second car. Wheels for the better half to get to college when I'm working away. At this moment in time I work from home most the time so the Freelander is a second jobber against the company Yeti, which gets most the trips and general wear and tear.
 
Not a million miles away from the plains. Home is just off the edge of the Quantocks so we're alright, although the roads to get here can be fun sometimes.

I think all the other elephants would laugh at a hippo with a bamboo cane... :D

Nice, I do like the Quantocks, despite being there when the storm hit in '87 :eek:

Can't help with your question I'm afraid. I drive leafers, if I can't fix it with a hammer I try a bigger hammer :eek:
