Hi all. I'm guessing the original poster was from the wisbech area? If so there's quite a few lanes running from littleport all the way round to Peterborough, although the nearer to pboro you get the flatter they become. They are known as the Bedford levels... They were in total offroad a few years ago.

Check this out; they have restricted 4x4 use for most of peddars now http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/PeddarsWay/uploads/Vehicle information sheet v5.pdf

the section from Fring, north to Holme has been closed for ages, aswell as those sections south of Swaffham because they were being ruined by idiots.

I drove from Fring, south to Castle Acre last week on the peddars and it was in good order so hopefully will stay open.

Have a look at this map Norfolk Countryside Access

there's still quite a few open lanes.

It's a cracking lane, I tend to deviate off and do the 3 fords at castle acre. There's a few lanes up near docking across towards north creake and then another 3 fords at north creake, walshingham and skulthorpe. More than enough to make a day of it

Emailed the local rights of way guy and he says that Prince Charles is involved in getting all the vehicle access routes repaired and opened again, Peddars way is one of them. A lot of the problem with ruts is also caused by agricultural vehicles using it instead their fields so they can plant an extra 10 feet around the edge; and trail bikes have been causing a nuisance to horse riders. Amazing what you can find out :D

Never been down it.. A mate used to take his moto x bike down there and tear around some quarry that's just off it... I didn't realise it was a legal byway

Cars go up to the ruins and park. From there it's 'unclassified unsealed' road to Sandy Lane which is part of the original road that ran from South Wootton to Pott Row - used to cross the A149 but that end is blocked off due to the number of accidents. Should be okay to drive....the police use it when the solstace thing is on in Autumn/Winter as the pagans have a ritual there each year.

Hi there. Will be driving to the UK in my 90 this summer (Cambridge & Dorset area). Would be thrilled to do a spot of off- roading while I'm over. How do things work in England? Would it be best to get in touch with some 4x4 clubs? Suggestions welcome.

Clubs is a good way to start.. If your coming towards north Cambs then I'd happily show you some lanes if I'm not working

most of the clubs in east anglea area tend to just green lane and use pay and play sites in the area.

Suffolk Landrover Owners Club has its own off road courses so most of their activitys are on the courses, sometimes they green lane.

Best place to start is with teh clubs in your area you are going

Just popping back to 2009 for a second, one of the original posters then, mentioned a 12km long lane paralleling the A604.
This is Roman Road and has been TRO'd for almost as long as I can remember. Most lanes in South Cambs are Seasonal TRO, open possibly between May & Sept as long as it doesn't rain!
Regarding Peddars, there is talk of shutting the Anmer bit again due to the 'repairs' cutting up again. Not repaired to sufficient standard comes to mind!
There is a stretch of Peddars south of Fring and adjacent to Red Barn Farm that has never had MPV rights despite motors continuing to use it. Similarly from the ford at Fring up over the hill is a no-no too, although years ago we actually watched some lads in a Ford Explorer drive up the hill and over the top - ploughed as well! Didn't get the VRM or would have gladly passed it to the authorities.
Whatever you do, get the latest info that you can from club ROW guys and/or Council dept

Can anyone post links to East Anglia clubs I can contact?
Anything interesting going on in GB during first two weeks of July?
Ta very much
