If your speedo is saying 60!? shouldnt that mean your actual speed is about 65?! defenders were never made to do those speeds...
last i checked my speedo always shows me doing 5mph under what im actually doing as for big wheels, tyres etc..
To be fair a standard Defender is stable enough to do 80-90mph without issues. The problems come with big tyres, lifted suspension, worn bushes etc. which encompasses a lot of "off-roader" type Defenders! :)

Speedos usually under read by around 3 mph, unless you have larger than standard wheels:)

A standard speedo will over-read slightly. By law they are allowed to over-read up to 10% (I think) but not under-read. So manufacturers tend to err on the side of caution. Increasing the tyre size will often cause the speedo to under-read as you say, which can make speed cameras a bit more "fun" :p

There is no standard 200tdi defender that will breach 85. If you push it that hard your asking for trouble. i once done 85 on the motorway downhill, it was screaming and my downpipe ripped off under the extreme stress i was putting it under. but thats just my opinion. maybe if it was factory fresh.

Not a 200Tdi no, but I was referring to other power units. Newer ones, particularly Td5s and Tdcis will do 80mph plus easy (once de-restricted). And they're perfectly happy at that speed, though fuel consumption is a bit hampered!

I drive mine (which is a 200Tdi) at about 60mph on the motorway, have had it up to 70mph for over-takes but it's perfectly stable.

Big Vinnie, my eldest lad came up to Catterick this time last year to spend the weekend with 1CS Regt. Got to play with your big toys, SVR, CRAARV and suchlike. Got cold, wet, and loved it.

Yes spot on - I ballsed up the reply. Was trying to say ordinarily you are travelling 2 - 3mph slower than your speedo claims. Thanks for correcting for the OP

He is. Put VM as his first choice, but it was full. So he goes with his second choice, Comms Systems Op in March. More sense than his old man or his uncle, we both went infantry. Still wants a Defender 90 for his first car, so something has rubbed off on him.
