Not bad for what you paid! I'd suggest you keep the canvas, clean it up, hand paint it nato green and then whack a 200TDi in it.

For that kinda money you cant go wrong! if all else fails you will still make your doe back by breakin it but hopefully with some tlc you will spend the summer cruisin around with the sides rolled up! sweet!

That is just the summer project I want... well done! Hope you don't 'spoil' it by raising it up and putting big wheels on. It will look so sweet kept original as poss.... but it will look good whatever... enjoy!

I once got a winter project of a classic mini.....£10.5k later it's waiting for a new owner.... then there was the 1968 MKii jag but that is still in the garage.... I need to get myself a landy project... but don't tell the wife.

Jim steinman what a lyricist.......

Thats ok if you have got £500 + to do the conversion....

Bollocks! It cost me less than £400 :) I suppose it does depend on the tools, machinery and work space you've got access to. I did mine at a Landy specialists :D If he keeps that ****ty petrol engine in there though, he'll easily spend the cost of fitting a TDi in the amount that he's spending on fuel. I've nearly paid for mine already. With the N/A it used to drink a tank on the trip down to my girlfriend in Ipswich and a tank on the way back up. It's a 220 mile run each way at around £45-£50 a tank. So in total, it used just short of £100 per trip. The TDi uses half a tank there, and just over half a tank back, so it's costing me £55 a trip (on average). Thats a saving of £45 per trip! That's only 9 trips and i've saved in fuel the price it cost me to do the conversion and i've done four of those already. It's well worth it. It'd be even more expensive with a petrol. He'll be lucky to fetch 23mpg out of one of those things, even less if it's a 21/4 and that's with the carb setup properly.

I get around 320 to 350 miles on a tank with usual driving (i.e. local stop and start, hills etc.) I get even better economy on a good long run. It's very similar, in fact, to the fuel consumption that I got from my 1991 MK2 VW Golf. That had a 1.6 EZ carb'd engine and it was a hell of a lot more aero dynamic. But I never beat 41mpg. I can get about 35mpg out of the 90 on a long run. That's sitting at exactly 60 the entire way, apart from some acceleration up to 65 before theres a big hill just to help it along.

It's your car, therefore it Must be the best Defender in the world. I know mine is.

Clean it, drive it, enjoy it.

Wouldn't mind seeing what it's like shortly, I fancy the idea of taking the roof off mine for the summer months.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi All,

Spent all day cleaning it up, starting to look "white" got all the moss off. The wife helped too!!!!! she's a good one ! Even got my Dad cleaning the canvas.

Looking at your Canvas. I had a boat with a hood in similar condition. Steady with the broom, best success I had was putting it in the bath and using washing powder and gentle rubbing, hot water and lots of rinsing.

You will need to re-proof it after. Almost certainly it will clean better than you think.

Looking good.

Bloody brave saying you have a girlfriend from Ipswich:eek:, Fair play to you

Another 5 trips and you can then swap your girlfriend for one closer to home, and save even more money:D

I used to travel from Sheffield to Chelmsford each weekend to see my other half. To look at her now, I sometimes wonder why I bothered:D

To be fair when i got my 90 it looked like that, but they clean up with a lot of TLC i recently had my engine changed to a 300 tdi... DEFIANTLY worth doing whilst the engine and boxes are going cheep.

Int nothing wrong with raising em and putting big wheels on em, they always look better in my opinion.
