Just got me first Freelander. But being a Landrover virgin so to speak, I'm wondering if Iv'e done the right thing. It's a black Td4 ES Premium on a 52 plate. 70,000 on the clock. All is well with it........except.
Picked it up from the dealer with a three month warrenty on 23/04/09.
25/04/09 had to call the AA to it. The clutch pedal went straight to the floor and no gears whatsoever. Very nice man from the AA topped up some filler under the engine bulkhead and bled 'something' further down on the right hand side of the engine. This seemed to do the trick, but he said get it back to the dealer for a proper repair. Got it booked in 01/05/09, no problem. While waiting to go in, this problem manifested itself another three times, once in the middle of a busy three lane roundabout. Scary.
Got it back from the dealer alegedly fixed - a new master, or slave cylinder, something like that. Two days later 07/05/09 I'm back on the phone with an undriveable freelander - with exactly the same problem, no clutch, hence no gears. As it is still under their warrenty, I let them recover it on a transporter back to their garage, to get the problem 'bottomed out' as he put it. I'm left with a bitter taste and no confidence instead of what should have been the 'dream car'. Am I right to let them effect these repairs, and hopefully get a reliable freelander, or should I walk away from what would be a 'money pit' if the garage wern't picking up the bill.

welcome to the forum !

You are right to persist with getting this fault rectified, and irrespective of when the warranty runs out, you have the right for this fault to be rectified as the fault occurred prior to the warranty running out.

Land Rover dealers are a law unto themselves, there is probably a component which needs replacing, but rather than bear the cost of the component and cure the fault, the keep fudging it hoping it will go away.

If you do a search on here for td4 clutch problems, you'll probably find a whole heap of information. (Mines an auto so I can't help sadly).

I see to recall that there was an issue with a plastic bracket the bent then broke, I know it was something to do with the clutch, but which engine variant I can't remember.

Stick with the car for now, it's not costing you anything to get the fault rectified. If it happens again, plonk yourself in their showroom and ask for a courtesy car, if they refuse start getting vocal. Saturday mornings are good as they are usually quite busy.

Good Luck and welcome again.

Thanks for the reply and vote of confidence Optimus. When they arrived to retrieve the freelander, there was a courtesy car on the transporter (an automatic Toyota Avensis), but hey, it beats walking to work and back, it being twenty odd miles. I feel you may be right about the dealer bodging a repair and trying to blag their way out of a proper one. My daughter has been running a W plate Td manual for years without a hint of trouble. Just the luck of the draw I guess, although don't the older models have a different engine altogether.
