I had my 06 TD4 Auto Sport MOT'd last week, Synergy2 fitted and on 7, EGR bypass kit fitted - passed with no advisories or raised eyebrows from the tester.

I have a 56 plate TD4 and although it takes a wee bit of maintenance I love it to bits.

ha i have a 52 plate td4 and i love it.its not without its problems the last owner hasnt really looked after it very well on the servicing front ect but nothing that cant be sorted.dont listen to the defender and disco owners getting on there high horse lol,they paid waymore for the same thing.lets face it if your doing any serious off roading/trialing you by an old vitara lol

I've '04 TD4 HSE, I love it. Comfy, totally reliable (so far), economical and quick enough to keep up in the fast lane on the motorway while being quiet enough for a conversation.
This coming from someone who had a 200tdi 90 for 2 years.

had my 06 td4 hse for 2 weeks now and wow what a difference between this and my 01 td4 gs faster more comfort just missing my cruise control but may be fitting one

A small thing to point out, petrol ones can be picked up for ten bob and a pickled egg and it's a great car to stick your spanners into for the first time. I've learned things which will come in stupidly handy for the rest of my life - none of my friends will be going to kwikfart uninformed now, if they end up going at all.
Can you imagine learning the same on a BMW 5 series or something? Nope, me neither.

Fair do's wasn't having a poke at Beemers, just an example of a much more complex machine that would be perhaps inaccessible to the newbie DIY mechanic
.One good thing about the 1.8 is the sheer amount of space under the bonnet - easy to find what you're looking for!!
One of these fine days when I have a garage or shed I'll pick up a K series lump for loving overhaul. Hopefully a relatively inexpensive introduction to engines in the flesh while my current lump is still driving around.

if you want an uncomplicated/inexpensive petrol engine to rebuild buy a old Ford x-flow.
rebuilding a K-Series is not recommended unless you really have to.

I'm almost reluctant to say how much I enjoy my 02 TD4. have it about a year now, 80,000 was very well looked after, bought it from a chap who worked in a 4x4 garage, before that I had a frontera 3.2, road tax for that in Ireland was 1640 p.a. now only 600. Malcolm
