Hiya,

New to the forum and looking to buy a good automatic Freelander - budget of 3 - 5K. I'm a newish but confident driver but given this want to buy an older model.

I've been looking for a diesel, after having read all of the useful info on here, but I have just chanced across this one, which seems like a good deal but its petrol. Is this one of the ones that has all the issues? Any advice would be gratefully received - I haven't got much of a clue about cars but I love the look of Freelanders and want to start test driving!

Land Rover Freelander GS SPORT

Thanks muchly!

On your post some silly ad software has put an advert screen scanners over the words 'Land Rover', which on this occasion makes it look like you're advertising Country Attire wear!

price is about right, visually nice condition apart from the o/s/r lamp guard hanging off, but mechanically who can say ?, mileage is quite low, probably because the previous owner couldn't afford the petrol for a V6.

the light pods on the front with the nudge bar aren't my cup of tea, but each to their own.

have a look in the "What to look for" thread for common faults.

On another note, its a GS only, nothing about it is "Sport" that was a facelift thing. Looks alright though

Looks ok. You can add leather heated seats from ebay- the switches can be added and wiring should be there already. You can get a leather steering wheel for a few quid as well and these will make it a lot nicer and with these it's best to buy a nice one then add the extras you want after IMO. 60k miles, so budget £300 to get a recon VCU from Bells and GKN support bearings (NOT cheapies as they fail within months) and an hour of work and then hopefully that will prevent much damage to the drivetrain as the VCU will be about to go. Personally though I'd have thought the V6 would be cheaper as the fuel consumption is dreadful so haggle for a hefty discount. At least get £300 knocked off and fit the VCU yourself. I wouldn't trust a dealer to do it as they would just get the cheapest rubbish that would be worse than yours, or simply polish up yours... Do it yourself and you KNOW it's done.

Yep consumption is high, and if you drive it without the prop you'll be wheelspinning everywhere until you get used to it which can get annoying!

But, recon VCUs are only £200 now from Bell. He seems to have reduced the price :D

Surely you'd want to test the vcu before buying and if the vcu was too stiff you'd walk away from an already stressed transmission...

Best way I know to test would be a 15 mile drive and see if the VCU is hot. Still, at 60k it should be ok, but about to go. Catch it now and should be fine! Yes, £200 for VCU form Bells, but don't forget it's another £100 for the good quality GKN bearings! My first set were £60! Massive increase in about 2-3 years!

Personally I'd look around. There are loads about.Low mileage doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be reliable with a V6, mine had full service history and 2 engines before it got to 50K. If you are dead set on owning a V6 then for you'r budget i'd be looking at a facelift. There's a V6 Sport Premium facelift on Ebay item no. 190929202631 and although not mint, it's only done 64K and although I'm not saying you should buy it, I reckon you could win it and fix the cosmetics for the low end of you'r budget. As a Premium spec it will be fully loaded too so you wouldn't need to spend more money upgrading either. I think spending £3000 on a pre-facelift V6 is a little excessive. You can pick them up far cheaper, and there are some that are gas converted too. You can even get facelift Td4's for that sort of budget - if you are prepared to travel for them.
My mate is a breaker and seller of all models of Freelander and he will only ever buy a healthy V6 , and then only to break. He will pay no more than £600 for a v6 regardless of the spec. He manages to find them for that sort of price so they can be had cheaply. I've seen some he's had in and was tempted to buy one off him with gas conversion a few weeks ago. However, he makes far more money breaking a healthy V6 than he would selling them whole.
The above is just my opinion, I am in now way associated with the vehicle on Ebay.I am just using it as an example.

I have a V6 which has had a replacement engine fitted by myself at 30K miles. The KV6 isn't as prone to head gasket problems as the 4 cylinder version. It is vital to keep a check on the coolant level and investigate any loss. They are prone to water leaks at the thermostat and top hose elbow due to O ring failure. This allows water to leak into the V unseen as it's under the manifolds. If the engine is allowed to run low on water it will damage the head gaskets almost instantly!
Other than this the engine is pretty reliable and most see well over 100K miles before major work is required.

That V6 Sport Premium ( item no.190929202631) went for £1950.01. Which just goes to show there are genuine bargains out there if you look for them. With the cosmetics done I reckon it would command £5000 + on a dealers forecourt.
