No don't try and use the clutch stick ya left foot under the seat, amasing how quick you can stop when you think your pushing the clutch down

I found the auto box a little odd even though I've been driving autos for years. I did ask about this when I first got it. It seems to rev quite high for a first gear and then slams it in to second with a bit of a jolt if you don't manage to play a very delicate balance with the peddle, great for towing (that being the whole point of the low gearing according to the user manual). I found that if you lift off at about 2-2.5 revs, it'll drop nicely into second without the need for a neck brace. Takes some getting used to I suppose and just try telling the wife that and avoiding a row-God forbid I attempt to tell her how to drive! (As she wrecks my beautiful car!)

i have just gone back from a d 2 td5 auto to a d 1 300tdi auto and i found the d 1 auto better than the d 2 auto, i get the impression there was something wrong with the d 2 that i didn't know about till i got the d 1 auto the d 1 is a lot more responsive.

Have a look on Ashcroft transmissions site and you will see lots of Q&A's about auto gearboxes. Sluggish in morning pulling away = partially blocked filter. Sticking in first gear too long= blocked govenor valve. Feels like brakes come on at 2000 revs = siezed sprag clutch. Any of these problems mean your gearbox is not working as it should and needs some attention. When they are working right you should hardly notice when it changes.

I am not heavy footed most of the time and my Disco 1 auto changes very smoothly between the gears.

I would say get that checked out by a 3rd party if you have a warrenty on it.

There is a lot of myth and mystery about autoboxes and it seems owners accept bad ones as "thats the way it is". If it was a clutch playing up they would get it sorted, but the idea of getting an auto box sorted seems to give them the vapors with cost, plus a lot of garages are not willing to take on a strip/rebuild and sub it out adding to the cost.
