Going from a Double Cab to a station wagon.

working my way through the tasks of taking the car from this....



to a station wagon for various reasons.
I've got the side panels, from an 88. Painted them.


Got a rear door, stripped, welded, and now painting it.

Got a roof, stripping it.

Got the seals for the roof and the top sides.
Roll cage will be adjusted after all that.

But need some help on the fittings.

On the diagrams I'm struggling with the 'stud bults'... these (338741)....

These are the ones that came off the 88, the shorter ones (defender ones, MRC9833) would seem to be better as I can't work out how you apply pressure to hold the top panel to the bottom. Is there a massive rubber tube missing? Is the hole on the 88 built with a long tube, hence the long bolt? My defender doesn't seem to have a long hole, so just buy the shorter ones? and just metal washers?

I'm scared to take everything off the car to start the job without knowing I've got all the bits to make it weather tight again. if anyone can take a photo of how these bolts go into the bottom, I would be eternally grateful.

I bought britpart bolts to replace mine with. I don’t know if I have the part number for them, but I think island4x4 will supply them.

On my CSW, the boots have a fixed metal “washer” welder on them. It goes above the body capping, but below the side panel. They have a rubber “spacer” top and bottom, then a washer and nut top and bottom. Everything clamps against the fixed washer I think. I haven’t built mine back up yet, but that’s how I assume it goes from looking at it all.

When I did mine a few years a go I seem to remember it being this way. Washer in between the panels, nut and wash top and bottom.

the 4 corner bolts bolt to through the tub tubes just a nut and washer at bottom of tube,later ones are shorter than earlier, rubber space then fit side and secure with large washer and nut, obviously brackets need to be secured to side before tightening down the 4 corner nuts they can be moved slightly to increase or lessen the amount the side is clamped down

So a rubber washer like this....part number 338550


Sounds like my fear of it not fitting is unfounded. The rubber will take up the space. I will get to ordering (annoyingly expensive bit of rubber) and start putting the panels on. Many thanks.

number is 338553,there is a little movement in bracket to side bolts

I don’t know to be honest, but I would trust what james has quoted as a part number, I don’t have the bits of rubber. I plan to make something work, maybe a shock absorber rubber adapted to fit.
