hi chaps
need a little advice please can any one shed light why my 200tdi just will not rev past 3000rpm.I have given it a major service all filters inc both fuel filters,
starts perfect, pulls away lovely no smoke (not joking none, mot inspector stunned) then it starts to fade after 2500 revs and sounds like it is being thrashed,I have put diesel redex through the system but no difference, it has never been overly noisy and has always been responsive for its age and when towing.I have checked turbo pipes and inter cooler pipes no splits or crud inside them this one has me baffled, hopefully one of you chaps or ladies will have more expertise on diesels than i have and can point me in the right direction.
thanks in advance:(

I had recent problem with TD5, ticked over great but had no pull or guts. After various independants looking at it and no joy it turned out to be the injectors, which have silicon ends?? well silicon in them that when my car overheated turned to jelly and set hard blocking the injectors, a common problem im told?? hope this helps, Im sure some one will correct me or put you right. There dead clever on here you know

Hi frog fart
yes mate started/primed ok no problems it had a new lift pump a couple of years ago, i had thought it may be an injector but not smoking and not lumpy on tick over,
thank you for reply
cheers.

In the fuel tank on the end of the combined fuel sender unit and fuel pick up pipes unit there is a one way valve that can become obstructed by crud over the years, thereby only allowing a restricted amount of fuel through. You cannot blow this crud backwards it has to have the unit taken out of the tank to be cleaned (speaking from experience as i had exactly the same symptoms and had replaced all the obvious)

Thanks STIG
do i have to drop the tank off or can it be done in situ when its empty. thanks.

In situ, no need to empty as it comes out from the top. Lift up carpet in boot and you will see in the middle of the floor a circular plate that has 6 screws fixing it down, remove it and the sender unit will be revealed, undo the 2 fuel lines taking note of which way round they are fitted (one is for fuel out and one for return) and disconnect fuel guage wire block connector, undo large black retaining ring and remove sender unit.

How many revs do you expect to get out of a 200tdi? It probably sounds like it's being thrashed because it is. Peak torque is produced at about 1800 rpm if I remember correctly and that equates to about 60 mph in top gear so if you could pull 3000 revs you'd have the fastest disco on the planet:D

It should pull 3000 rpm no problem. The limiter is at about 4500.
Is the turbo spinning up ok? spin it with your fingers (engine off!!!!!) and see if it binds

STIG;)
your a diamond followed your instructions this morning first thing, looked like a dry day so thought i would give it a go. Hey presto took it to 3500 rpm once warm pulled like a train again thank you (how the hell does sand and hair get in there looked like the plug hole at work)
once again thanks to all your fellas input.:D
