hi folks ..ive just realized that the more i search this excellent forum the more i see what can go wrong and whilst being fore armed can only be good you can get paroniod can you not.
but again thats same with any engine or car i suppose, good thing is ive now got a check list to go through , excellent site and some real friendly knowledgeable people, thanks for the help so far...

That's the thing with forums, you never get anyone posting that they don't have a problem or their cars running fine.

It's a bit like you never hear good reviews, just bad.

But hey, right now my car is running well so quite happy with my freeby.

****, that's gone and ruined Christmas!

Think you need to read around on lz a bit more! ;)

Both my landrovers are running really well, and have done ever since I have had them. Some of the others will say the same.
I know two people with freebies in real life, they have had no major issues.

no complaints on mine, cruised a nice 260 mile round trip few weeks ago ran like a dream, had a little rattle on tick over but thats disappeared, just done 83k..point i was making is its good to be made aware of what can go wrong and it keeps ya on ya toes, good thing , but then you start hearing things..that are not there...wondering why it took 5 secs longer to start..all of course for nothing

I have had my 06 TD4 for over 4 years now and not had any major issues, just little things that were easily rectified cheaply.
My problem with a soaking carpet is the first potential major issue, but hopefully I will sort that tomorrow.

i did have a small leak about a month ago sat in car and heavens opened had drop of water on gear knob..got home dropped the roof light console and it was coming in thru roof ariel..i poked a food bag thu the ariel taped it to the ariel and taped bag to roof..rained all night, next day resealed airel and job done, i brought wisely..2 owners full service, had vcu done with the deal..changed egr and pcv, just had a winter service

lol, it is true, hardly ever get people saying their car hasn't gone wrong. Had my L Series 5 years and its been boringly reliable. I did have IRD melt down but that caused me to end up on LZ and find the error of my ways - so that shouldn't happen again!

I had serviced our cars and fixed minor things, but was/am no ninja mechanic - but gave up on garages fixing things at about the time I got the Freelander - due to persistent problems being diagnosed wrong with my Disco by garages that ended up costing me $1,000s. So for the IRD to be the first thing that I 'had' to do myself was daunting. If you feel paranoid just turning your car on - try being a 'novice' mechanic and stripping out the transmission on the car, reconditioning it, putting it all back together - then driving it for the first time, or second time, or .... For a week or 2 I was convinced that it was all going to fall to bits, but it didn't and has been fantastic.

Just put the best part of 1,000Ks on it this weekend for a fishing and golf trip with my son and it was faultless - as it (very nearly almost!) always is. I even got it up to about 125 overtaking!

all credit to you for having the guts to have a go i did 25y as an old school mechanic ..in the days when ya diagnostic tool was a screwdriver, you set carbs with an air meter and timing by lining up notches on puilleys and rotor on no1 cly..tdc... we carried ..rotor.dizzy cap..points, 2 long plug leads a condenser, plugs and a lucas coil...but would i fancy stripping an ird ...respect to ya...

This trip was to the hydro canals and lakes around south Canterbury & Otago. We're targeting Trout & Salmon there using softbait, bait (prawns), spinners & fly. The pic below is our chilli bin for the trip, 4 small Salmon. We caught and released a lot more this size, hoping for some bigger ones! We both lost a 'monster' Brown Trout each - honest guvnor! If you visit down this way - let me know - I'll take you fishing down there - it is an awesome setting and I'm happy for any excuse to go down there :)

Not a pic from this trip (we go there often so you can only take so many pics) but this where we were. This is the Tekapo Canal with Mount Cook in the back ground...

This is me and my son at the spot where we got those 4 Salmon...
