Coming home tonight, ac on full and for the first time ever I noticed the temp gauge creeping up. Its never gone beyond the central mark before.

Switched ac off, windows open heater on full and by the time I was home (10mins of driving) back to normal. Ran the engine on the drive for 5 mins and stable gauge - ac not on though.
Checked the viscous fan- engine still quite warm and I can turn the fan by hand, definite resistance and I can't spin it. It hasn't got cold yet.
Tried the newspaper test, engine warmed again and no way is a paper going to stop the fan. So all ok?

Now the fans just behind the grill are the ac fans correct? Aren't these supposed to come on when the ac is switched on?
First check the L fan was turning just, second check both still.
So how should they work?

I suspect these ac fans and that all else is ok and that its only in these extreme conditions that a problem has come up.

Anyone got any thoughts?

AC fans behind the grille should come on with air con and also if engine starts getting too hot; fans are supposed to run on for a bit after as well. The timer relay is the tall green one iirc just next to the main EFI and fuel pump relays.

The fans often seize up and it sounds like you'll need to replace both fans, not difficult but a bit of a faff.

As for viscous fan, sounds O.K. but you might find it worthwhile just taking it off and cleaning up the front of the fan and lubricating the funny looking spring thing on the front ( I believe this is actually a bi-metallic strip) as it is this that causes the fan to lock up when hot so it needs to be clean and freee to move properly if you see what I mean. HTH.

Correct:)

Thor - the main engine ones or the AC?

Just had a quick poke as its stood for 24 hrs. Viscous fan is freer but frankly there isn't a massive difference.
Switch AC on and it engages and cools but both fans do start but then gradually stop again over 30 secs or so. Seems a bit odd?
I had hoped to simply check for power at the connector and then power the fans remotely to see where the issue is but maybe not.
Where is the condensor fan relay (k109) on a soft dash?

On the P38, the electric condensor fans can run at full or half speed.
Sounds like your viscous fan is the most likely problem, the electric fans are only needed to suppliment the viscous with the aircon on at low speed.
I have a mod for the P38 that uses the electric fans for engine cooling, I'm sure it could be adapted to the Classic.
