Just lately I have noticed selecting gears 1 and 2 can have
Some resistance in selecting them..even more so when the car has been running a while..is this a common thing in the FL1..??
Going from 2 to 3rd not a great issue..nor 4th or 5th..
Reverse can be a bit of a pig..but when the engine has had chance to
Cool down not to bad..where do I check my gearbox oil
Its a freelancer ixe 1.8 petrol..

Hi there. I am having this problem too. I've got it booked in my local garage for the gear box oil to be changed to see if this solves the problem. I have read that it could be the clutch slave and master cylinder but if it was wouldn't this happen when the car is cold as well as hot?Anyway the oil change is only 44 pounds and they assure me that it wii be the correct gear box oil the Freelander takes. Now to change the clutch slave and master cylinder they have quoted me 166 pounds but say it will be a genuine slave and master cylinder and not an aftermarket one. I'll keep you posted on how it goes with the oil change. :crazy_driver::crazy_driver:

When I asked him about it..he said it may this..

sounds more like a clutch problem, the clutches are well known for hydraulic issues when the clutch lever seizes up.

I now know what is wrong with mine as I'm sat at the side of the road now 2 hours in waiting for the RAC to come and collect me as the clutch slave and master cylinder have collapsed. Great!!!!!

OUCH... Sounds painful... how much is that going to cost you ??
not to much i hope...

Got it towed back to my local garage and a new clutch slave and master cylinder along with a new braket as that was bent is 166.00 . The new slave etc is a genuine landrover part as the garage suggest that the cheaper aftermarket ones can fail quite quickly. So fingers crossed that and the gearbox oil change will sort the whole gear issues out. The gearbox oil change is 44 pounds.

Yeah didn't really plan on waking up today and spending best part of 200 quid lol. I suppose reading the forums I could have had a go myself but would probably be still at it now.

yeah I know that feeling.. when it comes to cars.. I leave well alone and let my mate whos a machanic sort my work for me ..
cheaper than a garage ..but still good at what he does.. must'nt grumble..

I got money set aside for getting this work done,..

Make sure they lubricate the clutch arm as suggested by freelance as they can seize. May even be what caused the problem in the first place.

Thanks Alibro. I've got it back now but it does seem like a completely different drive. So much smoother. Makes me think how bad it actually was and how I adapted my driving to compensate for it. Fingers crossed for now.

Nice one, sounds like your garage is a good one. Just keep an eye on coolant levels and check the dipstick for mayo regularly and you should have many happy miles.
