I have a problem with my 1996 Defender 90 300 TDI. I can only get it into gear by forcing it. It will not go into reverse. It seems that when I put my foot on the clutch it is not releasing the clutch and the gears keep revolving. It appears to have enough clutch fluid. Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause of this and are there any problems which might occur in a landy of this age? I would be very grateful for any help. it is probably the slave cylinder or master cylinder, how would I find out which?

check master cylinder rod adjustment ther further the 2 nuts are away from cylinder the greater stroke you will have , does it need bleeding and is slave secure

Hi, as for causes, it could be several like:

Water in the fluid
Air in the fluid
Dirt in the fluid
For the above the best thing to do is to bleed it right through, it will only take 10 mins or so with two people.

Or Seals gone on either the slave or master cylinder, if its seals you should see evidence, including low fluid. So probably not this.

Thanks Amphermiser, I will bleed it if the previous sugestions don't work. Interestingly someone suggest water in the fluid to me yesterday as they said clutch fluid is Hydroscopic. I keep bees and honey is Hydroscopic so I can see where you are coming from. I will let you know!

Brake and clutch fluid becomes water logged after a few years and then it becomes fun.
In brakes when this happens, as the water heats up,(due to use), it turns to steam therefore pushing fluid back in to the bottle, which inturn leaves gaps in the line, and crap brakes.

Hi Guys
Thanks you so far. I have bled the system but am still not getting any movement it the clutch. The levels appear to be staying the same so I guess this would mean the master cylinder has a problem? If it was the slave cylinder it would loose fluid wouldn't it? Forgot to mention, this problem started with it being difficult to select reverse about three months ago to not being able to get it into gear at all. Hope this helps.
I look forward to your replies.
