Afternoon all ... Just looking at work I need to do during the summer and thought I might take a look at what's causing a whining sound rather like a spin drier when backing off in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. Had this problem when I bought the Landy and was told it would probably be a bearing. I've done a search and the pinion bearing seems like it could be the answer.
Does anyone know how to check or change this or indeed tell me if it is a big job for someone who tries to avoid gearbox work.
Thanks all ... it's an LT77 box.

whine on over run is usually diff but can be other, remove one prop at time and run on difflock to see were problem lies ,with front off and whine gone probably front diff the same with rear ,neither t/box or g/box,with props off and in diff lock you can feel the smoothness of brgs etc by rotating out put flanges in t/box,

Thanks guys ... I fitted a new rear diff and front prop a few months ago but the sound is definately gearbox area. It's more of a grating sound than I whine I suppose but fairly high pitched. The transfer bearing seems like quite an easy job according to Busters photo guide so may do that anyway. Drives and changes fine so more of a cure before it gets worse really. :)

dont remove them unless worn ,but you should feel brg by rotating drive flange preferably with prop off,but try front diff to ive nearly reconned boxs before realising it was front diff sound travels, checking oil condition can help identify which box if everthing else checks out okay

I had A noise like over run, each time I came to a stop it happened. As soon as i pressed the clutch and pushed gearlever towards any gear the noise was gone the hand brake cable was seized. Cant work out the cause, replaced cable and problem gone.

Mine does it when you take your foot off the accelerator and the clutch is not engaged. As soon as you engage the clutch the sound goes. Only does it in 3rd, 4th and 5th but I can hear it creeping into second now. New clutch kit fitted a couple of months ago too so not the clutch release bearing either. Will try what you suggest James, didn't think to check when I replaced the front prop! ... too much of a hurry to get the new prop on!

removing one prop at a time is something most, good engineers do if fault isnt obvious,as is checking oil for cotaminants as internal faults arent easily defined ,as gears in boxes are helical they try to move one way under load and other on overrun which can put pressure on different brgs in that a brg will sound all right until extra pressure is apllied during excelleration or overrun, but check easiest first and methodically rule out diffs props out put brgs t/box etc

James thanks very much for your help ... I'll do as you say and rule things out. When I bought the Landy it was a sold as seen px taken in by Churchill Land Rover restorers near me and it was those guys that told me it was gearbox related. I do have an oil leak on the transfer box too so will sort that when checking the bearings too. Cheers buddy :)

Cheers Pal

Hope all goes well tomorrow - will be thinking of you

Awww ... thanks buddy :)

She will fail as I know of one weld on the chassis that needs doing but being as you get a free re-test within 10 days I thought I'd see what else they find. I've done almost everything from last years advisories at least

I'll let you know how she goes.
