I thought things had being going too well.....till just now. Went out to take the car to the allotment and nowt! Wouldn't turn the engine over at all. I keep a spare battery in the garage so tried that...nowt! Sign on the dash saying "gearbox fault". Could this simply be low gearbox oil level? If I can get the car running I can take it down to my mates and we'll change the oil and filter. I've never noticed any noises from the gearbox in the past but I've just seen an oil patch under the car, not massive, but it's there. Help!!

A flat battery will produce a "Gearbox Fault" message. It's a false message due to low volts confusing the ECU.

That's probably the best news I'll get today Data. I've already took the battery off and I've got it on charge now. I've been under the car to have a look see and there's oil EVERYWHERE on the engine. If it starts in the morning, everything crossed for that, it's going into the garage for an engine clean and assessment of how many oil leaks it has. Then it's down to spare cash. Gulp!!

Make sure you dip the oil before you start it.;):D

If it's a diesel, the oil could just be a split leak off pipe.

Thanks to all for advice. I charged the battery overnight and it started straight away this morning. Good news, Gearbox Fault has vanished from screen. Not so good news, Fuse 9 has blown which I think must work the front windows as they've stopped working. I'm still in a much better place than I was yesterday so all in all, happy days. Oh, it's a 4.6 petrol by the way.
