HELP, i have noticed a leak around the gearbox/ transfer box today. I noticed that there was a puddle about the size of a dinner plate under the transfer box area.. Deos anyone know anything about possible causes. Would appreciate any info, many thanks....P.S. I have a 1994 disco one with manual gears...

youi will have to look under remembering oil will flow backwards over the tranmission so even a diesel leak from lift pump can appear to come from gearbox,

Yeah cheers for that Steve. I couldn't wait till the morning, I have just checked all diesel lines, filter and pump, they are all good. but i have found what i think is the cause... The transfer box has a filling plug, half-inch internal plug socket to be torqued to 20lb , so the book says... i did that earlier today, but like the novice i am i didnt start the engine after to check... I have now done so and found that the filling plug, although tightened to right spec, is leaking oil, quite a bit really.. does anyone know what might be the prob, maybe there is a washer type thingy that i should of replaced ???

20lb sounds a bit low, Ive always tightened as much as possible and never had a leak, Ive even had to get a breaker bar extension to undo a few in the past, personally I would tighten it up or if you dont want o do that put a few turns of ptfe tape on the threads

Cheers Steve

i thoought nm were smaller units than lbsft,30nm=22ftlbs

james, yep quite right I was using the wrong table hence the deleted post :) red wine vision LOL

Just out of interest is it parked on a slope?? it shouldnt really leak lots of oil from the filler plug as you only fill to the base of the hole??

Cheers Steve

Hello steve, i have the Haynes manual, it actually says 22ftlb for the transfer oil filler plug.. I was going by that mate. The oil filler/level plug has travelled a good half inch inwards of the box wall before tightening, and it was when i had the motor running that it was visabley leaking from the plug..

I happen to see 'busters-photo-tour-landrover-repairs' and noticed that his very detailed pictures of transfer box oil replacing, show that the fill plug is flush with with outer wall of box at start and finish of job... ??? like i say mine has travelled inwards of approx half inch or just over ??

I'd definately go for a turn of PTFE tape if you dont want to chance tightening it up

Cheers Steve

if i understand this correct, your plug has gone into the box further than being flush with the casing?

and if like jamesmartin says its a tapered thread, you need to be carefull you've not cracked the box

and also, is it deffo deffo deffo comin out from the plug? not from the cover just above it, or even anywhere else?

Hello stevo88, the plug had gone in further and when running engine it was defo leaking from plug... Today i took plug completely out to find out the the previous owner had put about 3 pints to much oil in.. Eventually after waiting for level to correct it self, I put a bit of pfte on plug and carefully screwed back in to find that it now sits nice and tight, flush with outer case and Happily doesn't leak anymore.......hooray. Have checked after driving today and still NO LEAK. I couldnt see any apparent cracking in box, so fingers crossed that will be an end to that. Thanks again for all Help.
