Hi.
2002 TD5, and the gearbox has started 'whirring'. I gather this is wear in the rear gearbox bearings, so a refurb unit is required.
I'm happy taking the gearbox out, but the engine itself does leak oil. I was wondering about removing the engine and gearbox together so I can fix both problems at once. Did this before on a 300TDi, but Mr Haynes does not seem to cover it in the TD5 book.
Does anyone know if removing the engine and gearbox together is viable?
Thanks. Pete

On both the 300tdi and the TD5 I've dropped the gearbox off the engine. Not too bad a job as long as you have 2 x 12" extensions to get a socket to the top two nuts for the bell housing.
Never looked at removing the engine but clearances look a little tighter on td5. I'd be surprised if it wasnt possible mind. Where is it leaking oil?

Thanks for your answer.
It's leaking down the back of the engine somewhere, but I just can't see it. It comes down the back of the engine then gets smeared all over the bellhousing and gearbox. Tried replacing and reseating the rocker cover gasket several times with no effect. Maybe I'll be able to see more when I can put my head where the bellhousing was!!!
