I detest all V engines, one too many heads, difficult access horrible uneven beat, but each to their own

Each to their own indeed! I think you'll find you're in a minority when it comes to disliking the sound of a V8 though. As for uneven beats - there are plenty of straight configurations with weird firing orders, some fives have straight cranks and uneven firing for instance. Straight 6s have perfect balance but have to be very stiff and heavy to keep cam and crank flex in check - so they are often heavier than larger displacement V8s or equivalent V6s. Long narrow engines are a pain to package generally requiring RWD, hence the general trend for V6s over straight 6s. I find most straight 6s to be rather anodyne - I much prefer my (v8) XJ8 Jags to the (i6) XJ6s. The V8s Jags are turbine smooth (balance shafts) and rev like crazy. Yes I know i6s are, from a purists point of view, better engineering as they don't require massive counter-weighting or balance shafts - but it's the end result that counts - gimme a V8 anyday! :)

Gotta love a diesel :)

Why? Some people don't care about fuel consumption and prefer the performance, refinement and rev-range of a petrol. I find the surge, next gear, surge, next gear of a typical turbo diesel irksome.

I do like TDV8s because they feel more petrol-like than many other diseasals.

Back to the thread - TD6 gearboxes are made of playdough! :D

Five cylinder engines are an abomination, a passing fad. IMO, up to 3 litres 4 cylinders are enough, 6 cylinders for 4.5 to 5 litres, no car needs more than 5litres.
