So - I have a 19j 110.

LT77 went bang - its a 50A so presume its the common output/transfer gear issue.

I have a good Lt77 from a disco (55A) but that wont fit - and rebuilding it to fit seems daft.
So my three options seem to be:
1) Rebuild my own box
2) Send to Ashcroft for a rebuild
3) try and source a second hand box and hope for the best. (I can then have a go at rebuilding my original box myself)

I also have a 200tdi from a discovery which I would like to swap at some point, but preferably I would rebuild that first - plus the 19j still has some life in it.

I've read many things about the conversion, but one thing is confusing me.

If I source a r380 replacement box (Longstick) do I need a shorter bell housing to make it all fit? I thought I'd ask before I start talking to scrappies. I understand that the discovery r380 will fit and are a bit easier to convert - again does this need a "Stumpy" bell housing to fit the TD or 200tdi.

Thanks for your input

to make the short r380 lt77 direct replacement you need the correct input shaft as well as bell housing , a disco to long stick requires a kit to convert the selector yoke to take defender long stick top and if replacing a 50 or 56a lt77 the short bell housing and input etc, your best bet is fixing your box if not completely shot

If its the output shaft input gear failure you may find you need both a new input gear and output shaft which means rebuilding both gear box and transfer box

I don't know what sort of workshop you have, but you will need a few tools to rebuild the box. I found a standard set of bearing pullers were not up to the job. IIRC, it was getting the 5th gear off that was the main problem. I ended up trying a couple of big levers which chipped a tooth. How about option 4) - employ Mr Martin to do it?

I went down the R380 short shaft route - bought it outright from Ashcrofts - it was obviously more expensive but one of the the best choices I've made regarding the Landy - the R380 is a much stronger much better gearbox, so if funds permit...

I also have a 300tdi but in the 2.5D position so the R380 was a no-brainer for the additional power the 300 has.

Thanks all,

Am I right in thinking that whatever solution I come up with for the 19j will directly transfer to the disco 200tdi when I convert?

Cool, Just been on the phone to Ashcroft - they advised that the 50A LT77 I have is not strong enough for the LT77 so wouldn't give a warranty if I purchased it.

They advice their "Stumpy R380" which is over twice the price.

Any thoughts?

what suffix is your lt77,bearing in mind both 200s and v8s used lt77s

Same as mine with a tweaked disco 200tdi. No problems even though the box was notchy when it had the NAD bolted to it.

I just dislike the LT77, I think is just a awful box, always suffered from weak syncros & layshaft bearings, it was designed for the Rover SD1 and was an updated version of a Jag box.

Having said that it sat behind a 2.5P in my 90 for 125,000miles before it blew up.

Ashcroft have to charge a lot more for the box as you are buying it outright and it has several parts which are low turnover - a deal can be done with them if you can supply an R380 as then they have a core unit and they may even take in your LT77 to have as a core unit - other option is to source an R380 - then buy the bellhousing and input shaft and convert a standard box - either DIY or have a transmission specialist do it.
