Series 3 refuses to go into gear and the noise coming from the gearbox sounds like a ballbearing rattling about noise stops when clutch in pressed any ideas?

Release bearing or pressure plate at a guess. You might be lucky and it'll be the clutch run dry or a failed master/slave cylinder which is easier and cheaper to fix. Is there any fluid in the master cylinder or any signs of leakage from either cylinder?

will gear stick move in all gears ,you have 3 selector shafts if one is out of neutral position even by a bit interlocks wont allow you to select any gear,check under gear stick all shafts line up and not half in gear, you also could have worn brgs ,more info needed

so you was trying to select 2 gears

I had this problem which was the primary bearing cage breaking up. It still worked though!

When I drained the oil , ball bearings dropped out!- time for depression....
