hi all i have a 200tdi 110 and have just checked the gearbox levels as it seems to have a whine in 4th &5th and found it has automatic transmission fluid in is this ok or what should it have in i would think this oil is a bit thin for a manual box am i right thanks would be greatful for any help thanks

atf or dextron 2 is the correct oil for an lt77 box. i presume it has one of these is reverse next to first?
change it for some good quality stuff and see what its like. could just be a tired box.

ok thats great thanks for your help it is a lt77 box its not that old will give it a oil change and see what its like then

Just out of interest have you got this sorted yet? I have a 200tdi Defender too, had the clutch done today and changed the transfer box for a discovery one, they also changed the oil in the gearbox because it was totally black. Anyways, I know they put auto oil in as it came up in conversation, and since I picked it up 4th and 5th gear whine (4th more than 5th) in acceleration and deceleration.....and they didn't before.

Anyone have any ideas

Noone have any ideas on this? Could the old oil really have covered up this whine that I am not getting in 4th and 5th? And if so is this noise anything to worry about or is it less damaging to hear the noise if I know there is fresh oil in the box?

Morning guys,
I'm sorry to bump this but I'm in a real dilemma, I've got the Macmillan 4x4 in a few weeks and I just want to make sure my gearbox isn't getting shagged!! I've got to take the 90 to the guys that did my clutch and disco transfer box/def transfer box swap to have the transfer box oil replaced (agreed that we would run some miles through it to clear any **** before its changed)....anyways, I don't know enough about gearboxes so if someone can shed some light on this I'd really appreciate it! Basically oil that came out of gearbox was black which I've read isn't good, but the gearbox shifted lovely and didn't make noise...now that they have changed the oil it whines (as if you were reversing) in 4th and 5th under power and on decelation (doesn't make noise while coasting) and I've checked this in low and high box and its the same so it is defo the gearbox...what shall I say to them?

when it comes to badly serviced cars it's one of those catch 22 situations

you either leave the black **** in there wearing your gearbox away or you change it and risk dislodging all the crap thats been stuck in there due to the fresh additive package in the new atf fluid

technically you and the garage have done the right thing

the oil should be changed every 24k or 2 years whichever comes first but folk that skimp on servicing always leave transmission oils off the service

for future reference pre 1994 gearboxes take ATF 33G (Ford spec) and not dextron 2 or 3, it wont get rid of your whine as the damage had been done. Your might be able to use something like Molyslip to queiten it down or try filling it with the MTF 94 fluid which is thicker(75W-80) and might fill the worn parts better

What brand of oil are you going for? I'll tell you what you need

Pete
