My TD4 has 114,000 miles on the clock, I bought it in January this year and has a full history on servicing, (well It is written down in the service manual),
My question is according to the book that the gearbox oil has to be changed every 60,000 mile,
I am assuming that according to the service book that it has been done, now According to the mileage mileage it needs doing again,
A farmer friend of mine has two TD4's and he told me today that he had the came across the same problem a few years ago,
He like me assumed that the oils had been changed on both of them at 60,000 so like I am about to do he had them both changed at 120.000 and within 2 to 3 weeks of changing the oil's both TD4's had to have new gearboxes fitted,
Is there anyway of knowing for sure that the oil was changed or do I go ahead and changed it as the book says

We are talking about the auto-g/box here ----aren't we?

If the wrong ATF fluid is put in I would not be surprised in the box was to fail - or behave strangely.

Just make sure that they use the correct fluid - Texaco ATF N402.

Very important not to miss the change as you can only get about half of the old fluid out anyway.

Also be careful who you entrust to do the work as if they undo the wrong bolt on the box (thinking it's the drain-plug) you'll have no reverse and a strip-down is needed to fix it.

gearbox are you on about manual or automatic, mine is manual, I'm not sure about my mates as it was about 5 years ago when there's went wrong and I don't know who did there work,
The guy who will do mine does know his job and know what he is doing,
I will not do any work on it at all until I see him tomorrow.

Ah - the manual gearbox oil is scheduled to be changed every 96K miles - where did you get the idea it was 60K from?

Here's a link to the workshop service-schedule sheet:

What tools are required to do the oil change on a manual TD4 gearbox? And is it ok to top up while the car is on ramps?

Just realised at 103k miles mine needs changing plus I'm experiencing gear change problems when cold in 1st & 2nd.

Cheers all

The only 'special' tool required is a srynge to refill the box as it's an awkward sod to get at the filler plug.

Check that you can slacken the filler-plug before you open the drain-plug - lots of folks have made that mistake!

The car has to be level to get the oil-level right - so ramps can be a problem.

My solution is just to run all four wheels onto bricks.

I find that's plenty room to let me get access to the undertray bolts and the gearbox plugs.

You can get away without a syringe if you use a short length of hose pipe wedged into the filler plug hole. Just make sure you clean the hose pipe first.

Glad to be able to help.

Make sure you get the right oil for the manual g/box - Texaco MTF 94

S.

Does it Specifically have to be Texaco MTF 94? or is there an equivalent that can be used? just wanting to be sure as ive heard of folk using equivalents instead of actual Texaco oils in the TD6 L322s and that it ruined the gearbox.

Bought my oil from the main dealers at just over £10 per Litre. Used my wife's digital kitchen scales to accurately weigh the 1.6L to give me a good guide to how much oil I had put in. Found the first bottle, which was fully sealed had just over 0.8L.
Filled the gearbox very carefully with no spillage. Took the entire measured 1.6l plus all over the second bottle. Only started to overflow from the filler right at the last bit. I feel like I was robbed by the main dealer for £4 worth of oil :)
To get the oil in I bought a 1 metre length of fuel line from Halfords and fitted a funnel in the other end. Got my son to hold the funnel while I filled and checked under the car. 8mm Allen key socket to undo filler and drain.
Job all done - many thanks for all the advice
