Hi I hope someone can help. I have a 2004 discovery 2 done 120,000 miles.
I have recently noticed an intermittent grinding noise when I’m in 5th gear and towing my caravan. I have not heard the noise when I’m not towing. The clutch was changed 18 months ago along with slave and master cylinder.
Thanks
John

I have had this when towing for long periods, I was told it's because I'm towing at low revs this wreaks the gear...to much strain. I have also had oil leak for same reason in hot weather. I changed gearbox both times for another used box. Both these occurred in Australia in hot weather. Hope this helps if it's the problem.

It could be your gearbox or propshaft under load, so checking the U-joints and gearbox oil level is worth checking. Let us know what you find!

I have just had to change my auto box on mine. Now,it did have a leak for quite a while that I had to keep topping up. This was fixed and it was ok for a bit but recently it got very noisy and jerky.
Now it is changed I am much more careful when towing our other car on its annual 550 mile journey. Changing down to 3, especially on inclines. So could well be good advice to use 4th or 3rd more.

OH yes zane2, check oil levels in both boxes, or change oil. Main gearbox you can swap for ATF if you need to. ATF (automatic Transmission Fluid) gets in better if you have crunchy or winey however not recommended if you love the box but will serve to help until you save up for a new one. Universal joints don't usually make gears crunchy or grind but good to check.

Just to let you know...my original box I drove for 2 years with 3 gears on ATF the remaining gears worked wonderfully and smooth till I got a new box 😁

Why would you say that??? :vb-confused2:
The gearbox is an R380 which take ATF as recommended.
So he should drain the ATF and add ATF🤔.

Sorry yes you are correct I was trying to say in manual box like r380 it is a better lubricant to help bad bits or noises. Therefore changing the ATF in his, may help or sometimes changing it several times in-between driving it over a week can clean the inside of any gearbox manual or automatic... OR definitely if low to top it up.That's why I say this just didn't come across correctly however thankyou so very much for asking to clarify.

Some say ATF is standard in R380 or gear oil is standard in R380. My R380 from standard is gear oil, just to clarify 😵‍💫 now I'm getting confused 😔
I think it should really be MTF but ATF works as good.
But gear oil 90wt really?

Suggest you check your manual.

Here's a link to a previous thread on exactly this subject, it makes interesting reading!

I think your reference to gear oil don’t help.
Most (I would venture to say) think of that as EP90 stinky think stuff.
So best thing is what’s recommended. But ATF works fine for my R380.
But MTF can be referred to as gear oil, it is a transmission fluid after all and they have gears :vb-weyes:
