Hi peeps, got an expensive phone call this morning.
Local garage rang to say the noise I am getting from my LR Freelander 2 SD4 SE is from the Gearbox/Diff.
Told me that it is a "main dealer or specialist" job and wemay be looking at £2.5k.
Is this a realistic figure do you think?
Any advice or input very welcome
TIA

They don't want the work by the sounds of it.

Take it to either places suggested above, and no it's not a dealer job.
I rebuild my own rear diff after Christmas, and fitted it a couple of hours on my driveway.

The thing is though, Nodge, you are an expert on the Freelander, you could teach Dealership technicians a few things. What would take you a couple of hours, would take the rest of us a couple of days.....and we'd still get it wrong the first time.

I don't know about that. There's loads of stuff I don't know about Land Rovers, especially as my main dealer experience is on Citroën vehicles.

LRs are generally built better than Citroëns though, or at least where the last time I worked at the dealer. ;)

I should imagine that if this outfit recon its the gearbox or diff - they mean the front diff, which is presumably more complex than the rear one. However, I agree, it sounds like they don't want the job rather than giving anywhere near a proper diagnosis of the problem.

The FL2 driveline layout is pretty similar to the FL1, except the FL2 front diff is in the gearbox, and the Haldex replaces the the VCU. The drive to the rear is via a PTU, which is similar in design to the IRD, only it's missing the front diff and associated clutter.

There's no way to tell the front diff has failed on the FL2, as it's noise would be marked by general transmission noise.

My guess is the PTU has failed (just as common as the rear diff) or the rear diff is noisy, and they're mistaken as to the source of the noise.
Or of course a front wheel bearing has gone noisy, again quite quite common.

What I do know, the FL2 is just as fussy on tyres as the FL1, which is something that seems to be disputed by those in the know.
However as the FL2 AWD system has no slip when the Haldex is engaged (front and rear are locked solidly together), the loadings with mismatched tyres are enormous. So it makes sense to have identical rolling radii on all corners, to reduce drive line loadings when the Haldex is engaged.

That's brilliant news. If I ever manage to get my hands on a decent 2CV6 I'll know where to come for advice. :)
