Hi all :) , just posting more questions as i'm still trying to figure out the kinks with my new Landy. There are a number of things that just don't sound right with the gearbox.

Firstly, when changing from 4th to 3rd and even 3rd to 2nd there is a low pitch whirring/grating noise when using the engine to slow the vehicle down. Could this be a badly worn clutch struggling to engage or some terribly unhappy gearbox components?

Secondly, if I am in 2nd and push on the clutch when driving there is a clicking noise as if something is loose and catching on something as it goes round in the gear box. Might something be broken within the box? If I am in neutral I can engage all the gears no bother with no noise etc.. so just from high range.

Finally, I'm unsure if this is gearbox related but there is sometimes a high pitched squealing noise when accelerating which goes away the higher the engine revs. Could this just be the fan belt?

If there is any light anyone can shed that would be fantastic! I'm very new to this and want to make sure I get it all right so its not an issue in the future. Thanks a million, I hope in a few months i'll be more use to you all!

Sounds like a worn box, drain the oil and see what comes out.May be more than oil.
:( It's amazing how a ratty old box will soldier on I have one in my series 3.

Yes, it sounds like general wear and tear. To be honest what you are describing sounds better than mine. The high pitched whining is probably your fan belt unless you have children or a woman in the car in which case it's probably them

Try fresh oil and see what noises are still apparent. Might find you don't have enough oil in there too!

There then remains two choices, rebuild the gearbox (either yourself or someone else) or bear with it, treat it carefully and see what happens. They do seem to go on and on in seemingly knackered condition. Only time to be worried is if the box doesn't make a noise at all.

Grinding changing down from 4 to 3 could be just the synchro. Try hesitating before putting it into third. It's quite easy to beat the synchro on old gearboxes by trying to rush them.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Im beginning to think its the synchro thats a bit knackered as I have to be fairly precise with the changes up and patient with the down gearing, although thats part of the challenge and fun I suppose. However, the clicking noise is still something thats beating me, maybe the tail end of a broken synchro spring clicking off something. I'm half thinking of getting a second gearbox on the cheap and rebuilding it and do a swap then and see how it goes.

Update on the gearbox.

So I finally got around to changing out the oil and I had a few surprises when I took the plug out. Am I basically looking at a new box to solve my issues relating to grinding while deceleration and such?
