Our Tdi 2.5 diesel has developed a strange fault and we would appreciate any ideas.
Whilst driving a few days ago it became a bit stiff to select any gear, but there were no noses or other symptoms. Then after driving for a while it went back to normal and nice and smooth. Next day all was well till I came back to the car in the car park and could not select reverse or any other gear.
I turned the engine off and was able to select all gears ok. Started the engine up again and all was well once again with the selection.
I have never liked intermittent faults! So any idea out there please?

It was, or should have been changed, around May this year during the service, but as I didn't carry it out I can't say whether it was done or what type of oil was used. Good garage though so doubt they omitted it, unless it wasn't due to be changed at that service.

does stick spring back to direct alignment between 3rrd and 4th or does it feel floppy

+1 - check this first - though, perhaps depending on how long you've had it, I'd expect you to notice if the bias springs are non functional

When was the g/box oil changed? And what type did you use?
Griff

+1 - second on my list would be check the level ASAP - and .... third... maybe drain it out to see if there are any solid bits which not be in the oil......

A good garage would have changed the gearbox oil immaterial of which service schedule in force, as long as you asked them to carry out the work. If however you didn't say to them something like, "And change the gearbox oil when you're doing the service" there's no guarantee that it was changed.
I would say get it changed just to be sure. And learn to talk to your garage, don't just assume. I've found that many garage mechanics like to tell you what they've done when you ask them, it makes them feel loved!
