Pic of the reverse gear can help with box identification.
Your clutch arm has had rod wired in, not unusual saves messing to put it in place after fitting box.
That bolt holding stick from turning not standard but guess does the job.
But gaiter/cover will not fit over it. It's an eye sore to me and ****es me off so much that I had to do something about it. With the box rebuild I'll replace the existing gear stick housing and pin.

No, that is just the casing molding batch number in pic above. The suffix is the one in your first pic on the edge of transfer box.

I thought so. No worries then. I've decided to go full hog on the parts and therefore get what is available from synchro gearboxes. At £850 for nearly everything needed it is just bliss! £1,000 in parts for a total rebuild isn't bad. Try doing this with a modern car!! I think the wires alone would cost just as much :D

This was off my S3 suffix D box , the stick snapped (not that uncommon) fortunately not far from home and luckily I had a spare box
I guess you just need the aluminium bit, the grub screw unscrews nicely and the old stick should remove ok

Not a lot need to check the postage , do I need to worry about import or export duties
Yikes costs a fortune to send by Royal Mail, costs more than a new part, any other options

None of that! Postage will be to my couriers address based at LHR. A UK Address. The rest leave to me.

Mine is 361*****D series 3 with synchro on all 4 gears

These have the ecm machined gears more explanation on page 37-20 of the s3 workshop manual

I get it! I have to check my layshaft to ensure it's the latest type. I have never rebuilt a gearbox before. The manual is great and thanks for the link Steve.

My biggest concern in owning equipment etc in Kenya is how to get it fixed. It's a ball ache scenario and I guess another blessing in disguise because I'll do a better job than if it was done for me. Still, I'm excited and happy with the way I've decided to go about the rebuild process.

I had never rebuilt one either until I did! Then did another one!
The best way to ensure you can fix it is to try and keep standard and have access to the green bible either hard copy or online and these days You tube so there is probably nothing you can’t fix if you have access to simple tools , the workshop manual even has a section on what tools you need , for your trips out in the wild also need a good spares kit and knowledge of field repairs/ bodges to get you home.
Mastering the manual may alleviate your concerns 🙏
