Hello all.

I need some urgent advice - I'm no mechanic so am slightly worried. I've just come to drive my Defender (110 Tdi 1995) and out of interest was looking under the chassis.

I spotted the gearbox and noticed that there is a hole where what looks to be a bolt should go, with some oil around. Should there be a bolt in this hole? I'm worried that if there is, the oil has drained out and the thing will sieze on me while driving.

Any help, advice would be very much appreciated. I'm away at the mo and will ne driving home tomorrow.

Thank you all,

Jon

Probably the hole for the bell-housing wading plug. If so, there shouldn't be anything in it.
But like what Daft says, we need piccies to confirm.

ere yar.

Clutch housing Drain plug - should be left like that unless wading - then yu fit (surprise) wading plugs. - Short bolts ;).

panic over - unless its flooding oil out, inwhich case yo rear crank seal has gorn .

Mad, thanks very much - I owe you a pint! I was quite worried as we're quite far from home.

There is some oil in the surrounding area, but not much to cause a drip. Is that OK or a sign it's on the way out?

I'll take yer wurd fer it - looks different to mine, but mine's a 200.

There's oil around it because it's the lowest point of the engine block, and that's where all your other leaks dribble to. Dip stick, rocker cover breather etc..

Keep an eye on it, wipe it clean so that you know where the wetness is coming from etc..

I had the exact same panic when i looked under my 300Tdi for the first time, I don't feel quite so stupid now. You can get the wading plugs on eBay for less than 3 quid.

You can get them from your local plumbing supplier for 15p
(it's a radiator plug).
