Gearbox fault?

hello just need some advice on gearbox

today i was in my p38 and i noticed everytime i stopped at lights or slowed down enough for it to go into 1st gear there was this jumping noise coming from the car i ignored it an carried on driving when i got to where i was going and turned the engine off i got a gearbox fault warning on my dash. few hours later i got back in the car togo home and everything was fine i drove it round for a while to see if it would come back but its seems to be ok.

does anyone know what may have caused this? is it early signs of gearbox failure, common problem or nothing to worry about? any advice would help as its worrying me thanks.

Have you checked the Gearbox Oil level ??? / were you drivin in heavy traffic ??? Stop/Start Ect, could be it just overheated slightly & you stopping it had a chance to cool down

ive also had this problem on one of my p38s,ive owned it nearly 8 yrs.just switch it off and restart car again and its back to normal for another 12 or so months gearbox has never failed

Just a question. What the hell is a jumping noise? Is it something like "Don't look at me in that tone of voice it smells a funny colour"?

Damn fine question there Tony!!!!!..... I must admit I did have to THINK about the OP's statement ..... I think I took it as a "Surging" noise!!!

Hence there was little or no ATF in the box & what was in was Boilin its Ass off!!!

Must admit Keith did not think of a noisy Surge. Maybe it was more akin to a quiet bang. Or maybe a loud silence.

I think my logic went summott like

Jumpin noise=Engine gets louder=surgin=Hot Box=little or no ATF=overheat=stops & it cools down...ect ect ect

Can't wait fer the OP to post up when he reads this

Must admit your Quiet Bang or loud silence reminded me of that variation on the "tree fallin in the forest ... went summot like

what i ment by jumping noise is there was a noise from the bottom of the car and it also jumps alittle forward.

it happend again today but as someone said turn engine off and on and the problem is gone
