Hi,

My 1997 4.0L V8 P38 AUTO is really testing my patience this weekend.

Out on the road today and pulled up at lights, knocked into N as was going to be there a while.

Moved selector from N to D and "GEARBOX FAULT" pops up on the dash, tried to drive away and it very slowly did so like the handbrake was on and there was a 10t trailer attached. But no nasty noises

Pulled over and turned everything off out in P, restarted and went for D and it jumped into gear and leapt forward like the if your foot slips of the clutch in an manual. Same result if you select R.

I have searched online and cannot seem to find anything amongst the false "GEARBOX FAULT"

You will have the HP22 gearbox. The gearbox probably flipped into "limp home mode" due to a fault. It has happened to mine and it locked into 3rd when it did. Wouldn't pull away.
It resets when the ignition is turned off then on.

Think you are on borrowed time. Slipping clutches maybe.

I dont know. It was checked and topped up no so long ago (1500miles?)

The way you phrase that suggests you didn't do it. Did you take it to Landrover or a Landy specialist? If not, get it checked yourself. You also said "checked and topped up" rather than "drained and replaced".

A "normal" garage might not know the correct procedure and if you simply fill it until it comes out of the level hole, you will be a good 1.5-2.0 litres low...
