Series 3 Gearbox confusion

I'm doing a total rebuild of a 1981 88 s3 and have reached the stage of removing the gearbox. I am trying to work out what I have! The output shaft housing has raised numbers 266811 then below 4E590 then below that WYF.

Any words of wisdom?

4-speed I assume ?

LT76 usually, unless a previous owner has changed it ...

Might be a 266 easy change gearbox used with 6 Cylinder petrol engine in the one ton and other special models... Suffix A only...

But @jamesmartin is our expert, he'll tell me where i went wrong again ...

Thank you both. The vehicle has a 2.25 petrol engine so a gearbox for a 6 cylinder would be odd, but possible. The car has been messed around with a lot!

have a look on the other gbox thread and see what number is stamped on the transfer case , can you put some pics up too
