hi rangie fans, my mate has a 2000 p38 dse with a nasty sounding problem. when he accelerates hard from a standstill or a crawl, he gets a double bang or loud clunking from the gearbox. the sound is similar to a propshaft clunk when the u/j's are wearing and you go from D to R or vice versa. its not that though, as its a double clunk in quick succession and he's had a new front prop. from a little research by myself, i think its the transfer box drive chain on its way out.
if so, what are his options?

i have searched. thats why i think its the drive chain. as a disco owner, i dont know much about rangies. thats why im asking what his options are.

i've heard it, it doesnt sound common to me. anyway, its very loud and from what i've researched myself, i think it could be the chain. my question is, if so, will he need a new gearbox or transfer box or can it be repaired?

its in t/box and can be replaced as long as sprockets arent too worn, try jacking both front and a rear wheel up g/box in p hand brake off and rotating props back and forth

is it worth repairing or getting a 2nd hand t-box? ive seen them on ebay for between £80 and £150 but the new chains are around £275 alone.

id buy a good used , unless you want to spend serious money ,putting a new chain in an old box will be better than not but by no means a complete repair
